Bailey Bugle, Bailey, North Carolina ?ferch 1951 The Race Page 11 (continued from page 10) uatior—had left him rervous, excited, a«d urable to think sanely. Had he been ' his normal self he never would have giggled in the face of his sociology professor, who was advising him as to his future, or attempted to date his roommate’s girl for the party given by the faculty in honor of the graduating class. The next morning Martin rose earlier than usual and ate a hurried breakfast, for he ■was anxious to. get under the wheel of hi’s new car again. There were few cars on the road so early in the morning. Martin was glad, for now, ho decided, was a i^ood tipp to see what his new car would do. Gradually and cautiJ- ously he raised the speedometer neeaie to 75, He cruised along at this speed for a mile or two and then eased the needle to 90. Suddenly a wave of horror swept over speedster McRr-y- son's entire body. From out of nowhere a state pa trolman had crept up be hind him and was giving him the "you-had-better- stop" signal. The usual calm disposi tion became irritated by the interference of the pa trolman. He decided to give him a race, really test out his new car. Keeping his eyes firmly fixed on his rear view mir ror, he stamped the accel erator to the bottom. At this speed it was diffi cult to keep his eyes on the road ahead and the pa trolman behind, viewed through his mirror. His fatigued body became introxicated by the excite ment of the race. It was exhilarating. No fines for him when he had a new Mercuryi Unseen, the Sharp Curve Ahead Sign went un heeded. The evening paper carried the bold headline, Wer.tstate Graduate Goes Over Cliff.
