Nature To The Rescue ByEuwicE ferry The road along which I traveled ran through farmland, deserted apparently because of the red, rocky, nonpro ductive soil. Uncovered by erosion, virhite rocks dotted the barren red clay hillsides. Small bushes vrere the only sign of grovrth. I came to the top of the hill and faced a startling change in scene. Not far from the road, on the left, v/as a giant rose vine covered vfith clusters of blossoms, Clossr observation revealed that the great vine was striving to conceal the charred ruins of what must have been the farmhouse, Hasses of bright pink blooms held the eye and shielded all else from vievf. Endeavoring to hide the fallen chimney, daf fodils had sprung up on the crumbled mound, "tossing their heads in sprightly dance". In the midst of this bleak, dull, and colorless farm Nature had designed one spot of beauty. Slovang my pace in order to absorb all the scenery, I realized again hov: Nature will struggle to disguise the scars caused by human recklessness and neglect. To my mind came pictures of poppies covering GET YOUR ITleats ERINKS Flou r CANDY Sugor OIQAEETTES FROM mci's GROCER Y the resting places of the deceased heroes "In Flan ders Fields", green plants follov/ing a fire, birds and vrinds carrying seed to denuded areas. Men and machines follov^ man-made laws. This scene was not planned by a set pattern; neither was it made by man, yet it will remain in my mind forever.
