Bailey Bugle. Bailey. North Carolina. October. 19‘?1 Page 18 /\ P3QQ C^f THq B^Silsy BuqIq By Doris Joyner Have you ever given thought to the history of a page of the Bailey Bugle? If you I'dll let your imag ination roam vdth me for a few minutes, you and I will take an imaginary trip backward through time and find out hovir this pa^e was made. While prowling around Bailey one afternoon, searching for old clothes, rags, and old paper, I came upon the basketball suit worn by lirs. Lassiter back in her Kentucky high- school-team days, one of the shirts "Boss" Vsfells vrare while in high school, and one of Miss Edith Far mer's baby dresses. These garments were sent to the paper factory in Plymouth ' to be "pas- tuerized". A few days later John Mor gan watched with sad eyes as two men cut down some of his father’s pine trees in -v^iich he played "Tarzan" as a small boy. These pine I03S were loaded on a trgin and sent to the same factory. At this factory a few graduates of Bailey High cooked the lengths of wood in chemicals, then washed them to free them from the chemicals. (Silly—huh 11) Next, several screens freed the fibers of for eign materials. The pulp was then thoroujhly washed and beaten by a machine. After this the fibers were brushed, and „put into proper lengths. The pulp from the garments v:as mix ed with the wood fibers next. Finally the paper was dried and squeezed onto large cylinders where it stayed until it was cut and sent to another fac tory to be refinished. After the paper was re- finished, the county bought a supply for school use. From the county of fice the Bu,^le purchased a number of reams. At last in the skillful hands of the Bugle Staff this page was mimeographed by Lois Thigpen and Jackie Lamm in order to reveal to you its history.
