First honor came Bailey's
way at Watson Brother's
Seed Farm January lU as
the chapter competed in
Nash county’s annual seed
identifying contest.
Three senior boys-Gene
Finch, C. D. liullens, and
Tommy Glover-along -with
their advisor, "Boss", rep
resented Bailey. The team
scored 2832 points out of
a possible 3300.
FINCH GETS 1030 POBITS
Gene Finch lead the TArhole
district 'vd.th 1030 points
of 1100. He received one
bushel of hybrid corn.
For capturing first place,
Bailey received two fed
eration banners, one of
which circulates to the
winning team each year.
IDENTIFIES So SEEDS
The boys had to identify
50 different types of
seeds. In addition there
were four samples of four
different seeds to be judg
ed for purity and quality.
The agricul.ture class had
been studying about 1!?0
different kinds of seeds
for one v.'eek before the
contest. Some were actual
plants and seeds preserved
in celluloid cases and
glass bottles while some
were only pictures.
Following the contest was
the federation banquet at
Overtons in near-by Rocky
Mount.
Veterans Continue
Farn^ Work
Unless changes are made,
veterans in and around
Bailey will continue their
farm studies until July 27,
1955.
According to the G. I.
Bill of Rights, anyone
completing three years of
service is due four years
of schooling.
At present, under the
leadership of Willard Mea-
coraes and Y/illard Perry,
the veterans are studying
the new yearly farm plans
and are completing records
for last year's farm pro-
g;rams.
Freshmen Begin
Shop Work
As the new year opened,
the freshmen boys began
shop work.
Until the Christmas holi
days, they studied working
lumber bills and the use
and care of tools.
Occasionally, during
their spare time, freshmen
boys have constructed shoe
shine boxes or other easy
articles, as bird houses
and what-nots.
For their first class pro
ject, each boy is . con
structing a nail box.
