Now that moving is just
about over, we can take
stock to see how we came
out in the shifting of stu
dents from school to
school and with dropouts.
So far there has been a
gain of four in the grades
and a loss of twenty in
high school for a net loss
of sixteen. Compare this
with a net loss of fifty-
one last year and you see
we have done much better
this year than last. Last
year was the first one in
several in which losses
were alarming. The change
in trend is a good one.
If a student leaves Bai
ley and enters another
school, he or she is none
the worse off. The drop
outs are the ones who will
suffer for it.
The North Carolina Public
School Bulletin has some
pertinent information and
at least one remedy for
the situation.
Last year in this state
h3)991 boys and girls-
dropped out before the end
of the term. What reasons
can be given for the drop
outs, Some ares ill health,
going to other states,
jobs, and some because
they could or did not ad
just to school.
What ever reasons there
are for these dropouts,
there is need to find out
the exact reasons in each
case. No teacher has time
to look into all these
cases. Attendance officers
who can do the job need to
be hired. Let's hope the
next General Assembly will
put attendance officers
in each administrative
unit in the state.
