PATT.Tinr BTTr,T.F.j RATT.KY^QEIH OflROT.TNAj APRIL,-X9,!^— You And Your Manners.. paPtF. 17 LOIS THIGPEN DON'T ATTRACT ATIENTION The most important rules of behavior in the street are those against doing things that are conspicu ous. All people in the streets or anyx^here in public should be careful not to talk too loud. They should expecially avoid pronouncing people’s names or making personal remarks that may attract passing attention or give a clue to their identity. Ihere is nothing that stamps the vulgarian more than advertising his possessions or achieve ments by loud word of mouth any where! SMOKING It is still impossible to imagine a lady walking on a city street either chew ing gum or smoking. Nor does a gentleman walk with a lady on a city street and at the same time smoke. PROPRIETIES THAT REMAIN Notwithstanding the supposed freedom of the modern day, a certain few fixed rules of propriety do, however, remain. It is still considered a serious breach of decorum to allow a young girl to sit up late at night with a young man-or a number of them- after her elders have gone to bed. On returning home from a party, she must not invite or allow a man to "come in for a while." If he insists, she should ansx^er casually but firmly, "SorryI It's against rules. Good night." MANNERS THAT PLEASE A MAN It would be hard to think of anything more at vari ance with the precepts of etiquette than a woman who is continually looking at herself in her vanity mirror, fussing at her hair, and dabbing at her face. It is not only bad form but evidence of ignorance of the meaning of charm. WRITING LETTERS Never send a letter with out reading it over and making sure that you have said nothing that can possibly "sound different" from what you intended to say. Never, so long as you live, vjrite a letter to a man-no matter who he is- that you would be ashamed to see in a noT/Spaper above your signature. Remember that eveiy word of writing is immutable evidence for or against you, and words which are thoughtlessly put on paper may exist a hundred years hence. Never write anything that can be construed as senti mental . Always keep in mind, and never for one instant for get, that a third person- the very one you would most object to-may find and read the letter» Never take a man to task about anything; never ask for explanations. To do so not only implies too great an intimacy but will \in- failingly make him go-and stay-as far away from you as he possibly can. One word more; It is not alone "bad form", but lay ing yourself open to every sort of embarrassment and danger, to "correspond with" a man you know slightly. RUN AFTER A MAN? Cat-like, a girl may do a little stalking! But "run"? Not a step. Ihe freedom of today allows her to go meet him half-way, but the girl who runs, runs after a man who run.s, fasten! lAs per Enaly Post) E ven Our Least EXPENSIVE SERVICE is one of IMPRESSIVE DIGNITY and BEAUTY* Joyner’s Funeral Home I'JILSON.
