P. Underwood, In years past Bailey has been leading all other Nash County Schools in accidents. This year's record is a result, Mrs. Underwood says, of the concerted ef forts of students and tea chers to "redeem" their past, IN CHARGE l-Irs. Underwood has charge of accidents that occur in the lower grades; and, if a high school student has a serious accident, she takes care of that also. Miss Edith Farmer has a first-aid kit in high school to take care of any small cuts that students might get, SUPPLIES The county furnishes all first-aid supplies for the school. Among these are merthiolate, iodine, vase line, unguentine, band- aids, ammonia, sterilized cotton, cotton-tipped applicators, alcohol, ad hesive tape, oil of cloves, ear ache medicine, boric acid, antiseptic soap, various sizes of sterile gauze for bandages, hot water bottle,,and an ice bag. These supplies are distri buted to all teachers in the grammar grades, but Mrs. Underwood keeps the sterile bandages in the office, Mrs, Underwood is also in charge of the sick room. On January 1, Tar ' Heels will come under the juris diction of a new law which was enacted by the 1953 General Assembly, Entitled the "Moter Vehi cles Safety Responsibility Act," it insists that .eve- xy individual who operates a motor vehicle be pre pared to pay for any dam ages he or she may cause— or else surrender his or her right to drive, THE LAW The new North Carolina law (which is already in force in 1x3 other states) provides the following: 1, The required filing of two reports following eve ry wreck which results in damages exceeding ^100 or where there has been a death or injury—one re port going to the local police agency and the oth er to the State Depart ment of Motor Vehicles, 2, The pjsting of securi ty to cover damages within does not have the custom ary liability insurance to meet damage claims up to $11,000, 3. Loss of one's driving privileges at the end of 60 days' if' there is no such liability insurance and if the necessary secu rity is^ not posted, such suspension to continue un til the requirements of the law have been 'satis fied.
