Our library is small, of course, but vre are contin ually striving to add to the number of volumes. Recently approximately ^600, worth of books has been put in the library and on the Si5)plementary Reader shelves. Each stu dent has an opportunity, yes, an obligation, to ex plore them, to become ac quainted with them, to make them a part of him self or herself. IiTHAT CAN YOU GET FRCM A BOOK? You can get history. Why do you want history? What good will it do you? Why learn about the past? His tory is important to us because wg can understand and appreciate the present and we can anticipate the future better if we know what has gone before. As you read and learn about how our country was set tled, about the hardships endured by the early Amer ican pioneers, about the way our comtry has ex panded, you can help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in the feat. As we learn more about our state, we also appreciate it more. Very likely the greatest good will come as we learn to understand the peoples of the world. As we understand them better, we will have fewer things on which to disagree. It will have to be a two-way process, of course,aii-’ the other people will have to learn more about us in order to be tolerant of oia: point of vievj. History will give you the needed information. BIOGRAPHICAL READING "The lives of great men oft remind us." Biography? Yes. Read the lives of the leaders of the world in music, art, literature, science, business, poli tics, military affairs, religion, education and all the other fields, and you will have a very defi nite plan which can be followed in a well-ordered life. If you are trying, or will be trying soon, to decide what to do for a living, explore the possi bilities through the lives of people who have made their mark in their chosen work. If you have already decided ' what you plan to do, much help can,.come by reading in the chosen field, "And parting leaves behind us footprints on the sands of time." Reading for pleasure is one of the best ways that we can spend our leisure time. Much good comes from this type of reading.
