"A young boy once asked
his father when he would
be old enough to do as he
pleased. His father’s re
ply was, 'Nobody knows,
son. No one has ever lived
that long'". How many of
VIS, as students, have
often asked or thought the
same thing? I'/hat would be
the result of everyone's
doing as he pleased. Chaos
would follow. Lot us learn
to abide by the rules and
there will be more freedom
for all, \iJhen the reckless
driver refuses to heed the
stop sign, the stop light,
the speed limit, he endan
gers the lives of all of
us. Even though we drive
as carefully as we know
how, sometimes there are
accidents. In school as in
driving let us do the very
best that we can in obey
ing the rules, "Rules make
it possible for us to know
what we can expcct from
the other fellow." They
keep us from stepping on
his toes and keep him from
stepping on ours.
In a democracy there are
rules for us to follow. Be
fore long the high school
students will be voting,.
Already in school you arc
voting and learning the
importance of voting wise
ly. In a democracy, we
learn responsibility as we
enjoy privileges, What arc
some of the responsibili
ties in a democracy? They
are—
1, Keeping informed^
Learn the rules in order
that you may obey them.
Learn youi* schedule of
activities in order that
you may participate wisely.
Know when tests are to be
given, when papers are due,
when book reports are to
be in, and this will help
you to get better grades
in yotir work,
2, Accepting majority
rule. When more than half
of a group want something,
go along iTith the majority
when nothing of morals or
right or wrong is involved,
3, Being tolerant ' of
others. It could just be
V0 are wrong. The othor
fellow must have the privi
lege of his opinion. Let
us not get the idea that
all who disagree with us
are wrong.
Protecting school pro
perty, "School property be
longs to you. If the desks,
books, tables, chairs,
vjalls, and athletic equip
ment are in good condition,
it is because thoso who
have used them previoxisly
have taken pood care of
theiii."
Check ’jp on yoiorself to
