BAILEY BUGLE, BAILEY, NORTH CAROLINA, OCTOBER, 19Sk Page 3 Principal Rpporting We are in dire need of more competence. What is competence? Webster says that it is fitness; abili ty. Filling a job success fully requires the ability to do what the job demands. The person who is hired to dig ditches must have the ability to dig ditches if he is to keep his job. The corporation president must have abilities demanded by his job. The requirements of the two are far from the same but each man must produce, GRADES In checking on grades for the first report period,I find that many of our stu dents are not producing. Too many students do too little work, too late. By the time that you get your Bugle, the second month will almost be over. That will represent almost one fourth of the year. There is no better time than now to get to work. PASS BIG GRADE We set up as passing in the high school a grade of 70, Some do not attain even this level. Had you ever thought that you would not hire a contrac tor with a grade of 70; that is for every 100 houses he builds, 30 falls down. Nor would you hire a bridge engineer who has 30 of each 100 bridges he builds fall down. It would not be very pleasant buy ing automobiles from a com pany with a grade of 70, Do you not see how impos sible it would be to get a- long in the business and industrial world on a grade of 70? It would be fine for each of us to set M. W, WE/iVER as our. goal a grade much higher than 70, I'iany of us do. For those who have not set out to make 70, may I urge that you realize the importance of doing your best, that you be as compe tent as your abilities, your desires, and your de termination will permit, BASKETBALL SEASON Basketball season begins soon. Ifey every player, every teacher, every stu dent, every patron display the highest type of sports- m.'^.nship that is possible. For several reasons, we are asking that there be no smoking in the gym at games this year. Good luck to you members of the team. Play the best that you can. If that is good enough to win, fine; if it is not, do not alibi. Take your de feat like a man, JUDGES NAIE CHEERLEADERS Patty Thompson, Betty Stallings, Becky Lamm, Andrea Bissette, Faye I'lor- ris, Jane Burgess, Nancy Medlin, Sonja Lamm won out yesterday in the cheer leader contest.
