BAILEY BUGLg. BAILEY. NORTH CAROLINA. APRIL. 19*^6 Attendance Drops; Added Tedcher Unlikely Pagfe...3 Hopes of gaining an addi tional teacher in high school for next year were shattered when enrollment dropped to 202, thus mak ing the goal of averaging the required 200 daily at tendance an impossibility, "Loss in membership, in difference, and flimsy ex cuses" were the factors stated by M, W, Weaver, principal, as attributing to the high number of ab sentees during the year. The absentees resulted in the loss of the "hoped-for" teacher, 'HOPEFUL' BEGINNING At the beginning of the year, the outlook was "sat isfactory" when 212 were enrolled in high school, meaning 12 absentees per day would still keep the average up to the required 200 daily attendance. For the second and third months, enrollment was 210 but dropped to 209 the fourth month. When enroll ment dropped to 203 for the fifth month, the goal of gaining a new teacher had turned into an iit^jos- sible feat, Ifembership at present rests at 202, AVERAGE NEEDED To obtain the teacher, the high school must aver age 200 daily attendance for six consecutive months out of the first seven months, either first through sixth month or sec ond through seventh month* Absentees because of conta gious sickness do not count against gaining the teacher. Through the first six irxxifclis, the high school has avfciiagwd 19"/.InHV"- C Stone Of ACC Does Practice Teaching Here When Garold Stone of Middlesex started teaching at Bailey, the I'feth de partment had its first practice teacher. I that he taught. ing them 2,1| students short of their 200 daily attendance goal. With the present enrollment, 202, the feat of averaging 200 daily attendance during the seventh month is al most "irrpossible," Attendance in the grammar grades has been "about average," even with the epidemic of mumps, causing 588 absentees during the late fall, Munps and colds have been the main reasons for sick absences, "During the give-and-take of the moving season the grammar grades retained 3S6 of their original 35o students," states Weaver.
