NORTH CimOLINA, SEPTEMBER. 19^6 PAGE 6 Hilburn Directs Band fotor Enrollment Up At School Opening Maurine Hilburn replaces former band teacher, Sam uel Keene, who has moved to Sebring, Florida. Hilburn’s first remark vjas that Keene "certainly did a fine job in such a short period of time," Leader Hilburn, a gradu ate from East Carolina C0I7 lege, says his ajnbitionis to have a fifty piece band by next year. The band now has twenty- four members in the senior band and nine in the jvin- ior band. .JANITOR RETIRES After approximately eight years of servicc as jani tor for the school, Cary Finch retired at the end of term last spring be cause of age. During his eight years here, Cary fulfilled alone his numerous duties of cleaning and firing until the latter part of 19^h when Maxine Reid came to work as maid. She and Cary worked until the end of the '^5-‘56 school year. After her marriage during the summer, Maxine moved to Greensboro, leaving her job open. This year Cary arid liaxine are replaced by Johnnie Kent as janitor and Edith Mae Reid as maid.' Five hundred eighty-four students, more in t-f^tel than in previoHS years, enrolled at Bailey High School, August 29, to be gin new school term. In grammar school the total number of students reaches 371, with the en rollment ranging from 29 to I4I in the different grades. These students are under the instruction of 11 elementary teachers. The remaining 213 are high school students in seven homerooms with nine high school teachdrs in structing them. By adding the public school music teacher^the private music teacher, and the tand leader to the other 20 members of the faculty, Bailey High has a total of 23 teachers.
