In Essay Contest
ffeking rural youth of
high school age conscious
of "How Our Family Sized
Farms Can Survive And Grow"
is the major purpose of
the annual Cooperative
Essay Contest for 1957*
Short news items have
been issued to students
who plan to participate in
the contest, but the num
ber of those who will com
pete is not at present
known.
The contest, started in
1928 by M, G, Mann as a
part of the educational
program of the Cotton Asso
ciation, is held each year
in regular high schools,
and offers five state
prizes,
WINNERS
First place winner of the
state contest will receive
$3^0 in oash and a one-
year tuition scholarship
to N, C, State College,
Clemson College, the Wo
man's College, or some com
parable institution, ei
ther in North Carolina or
South Carolina,
Winner of the second
prize will receive $200
cash, while the third
place winner will receive
$100* Fourth prize will be
.$7$, and fifth prize is
$50♦ Cash awards will also
be presented to district
winners,
This is not at all the
only contest offered to
Bailey's students, for
they have been given the
opportunity to compete in
the World Peace Contest;
the Medical Essay Contest,
and the Betty Crocker con
test for senior girls.
Students,Teochers Face Voriou's Drives
School drives and fall
months are synonymous
terms id.th most schools,
and Bailey is no exception,
haying had to date thir
teen fund-raising events,
according to office re
ports.
These drives have been
sponsored by different or
ganizations for the pur
pose of refinancing trea
suries, buying band uni
forms, promoting profes
sional interests, and pro
viding for the needy.
Students have participat
ed in these events "with
enthusiasm," the sponsors
agree.
The types of drives en
countered by these stu
dents have been the PTA
membership, Junior Red
Cross, BUGLE subscriptions,
and the Halloween carnival.
This has also been a
"drive period" for the
teachers.
Other than their school
work, they have been solic
ited for membership in the
following organizations:
the national NEA, state
NCEA, county NCEA, and CTA
and asked for donations to
the senior Red Cross,
The junior class and the
band have raised funds for
class purposes by sponsor
ing a magazine contest, a
Tiny Tot Circus, and a to
bacco drive.
