Miss Clara Lou Stott, a 1953 BHS graduate and a 1957 Appalachian graduate, will begin teach ing in the eighth grade next month. Miss Stott is . replacing lirs, Harvey Evans, who is having to leave the school room because of health. At the beginning of the new ye?r, there were two other vacancies, a first grade vacancy and the coaching job, both of which have been filled. Robert C, Horne will take over the teaching and coaching duties of Coach V/, H, Westall, Filling the vacancy left by Mrs. Effie H, Hagwood for the spring semester is Mrs, Peggy Llassengill. BAND INCREASES Playing for assemblies and at some of the home basketball games are added activities of the band this month. Assembly music for stu dents to march in by has been provided in the past by a record player, but now the band will furnish t-ho music. The baiid plans Sr. Gift Replaces Present Cyclorcima After much thought and discussion as to the na ture of their gift to the school, the seniors voted unanimously upon a cyclo- rama. Including installment, the cyclorama and a new track has cost approxi mately C>325. COLOR Considering the color of the front curtain, the class decided that a gray diamond-cord would be a more appropriate color to replace the present tan. The National School Sup ply Co., Inc., in Raleigh installed the cyclorama January 12. to play two or three ni^i- bers, if possible every assembly. Playing for some of the home basketball games has been an added feature this month. Music to be ordered in the near future will in clude classical, popular, and a little Rock and Roll. HopG Continues For Added Teacher With an attendance rate of 20ii in high school for the first four months, chances for an added teach er prove to be more "hope ful", Principal Weaver says. Also for the first four months in elementary school, attendance x^as at a 355 rate, "Since this rate is so near the limit, it must not be lessened," Weaver added. The deciding factor lies between the first through the sixth or the second through the seventh months. The period with the high est attendance will deter mine the answer of whether the high school gains a teacher next year. FACTS ATTEST RESULTS Study of term grades re veals the effect of attend ance on grades, A large majority of honor roll stu dents have a perfect at tendance record, while those with below average grades have poor records, SENIORS; 3 honor rolls-1 perfect attendance; l8 av- eragej 22 under B- --10 poor attendance. JUNIORS: 5 honor rolls—5 perfect attendance; 20 av-“ erage; 22 under B- - 5 poor attendance, SOPHOMORES: I4. honor rolls— 2 perfect attendance; lii average; 1^2 under B- —26 poor attendance. FRESHMEN: 5 honor rolls— k perfect attendance; 18 average; 35 under B~ —11 poor attendance. ACTIVITIES
