GHS Swimmers Win State Title at Duke
Edge Out Victory

Win By One Point. 33 to 32; Crone,
Casey. Britt, Dawson Star;
First State Win
Winning the first state high school
championship in the history of
GHS, coach Ealph Casey’s tank-
sters edged out a 33-32 victory over
last year’s champs, the strong Kan
napolis team, to win the State Swim
ming Meet, held at the Duke Uni
versity pool April 17.
The two-year-old tank team
brought to Goldsboro High School
the first state athletic championship
that it has ever won.
Goldsboro’s ace divers, Crone and
T. Heyward easily captured first and
second as Crone set a new state rec
ord of 90.3 as compared with the
77.15 record he set last year. With
the divers gaining an eight-point
lead, GHS never fell behind in the
scoring.
Captain Casey continued his rec
ord-breaking performance in the
breaststroke by gliding through this
event in 1:17.6. The old record was
1:22.8. Casey was also high scorer
of the meet with seven and two-
thirds points.
In the most thrilling event of the
day, Goldsboro’s medley relay, com
posed of Dawson, Britt, and Casey,
cut five seconds off the 1 ;42.8 old
record, to swim this event in 1:37.8.
The finish was the closest of the day,
as Dawson splashed to the bank
only a few inches ahead of Kannap
olis’ anchor man.
Goldsboro’s scoring was as follows
—100 yard breaststroke: Casey,
first; 220 yard freestyle: Tilghman,
fourth; 100 yard backstroke: Ken-
Britt, third; 100 yard
freestyle: Dawson, third; Diving:
Crone, first; Heyward, second; 150
yard medley relay: Casey, D. Britt,
Dawson, first; 200 yard freestyle re
lay : Weathers, Daniels, Hood, Tilgh
man, third.
The scoring was: Goldsboro, 33;
Kannapolis, 32; Ealeigh, 17; High
Point, 16; Oak Eidge, 5; Wilming
ton, 3; Durham, 0; and Greensboro,
0.
QUAKES LOSE TO KINSTON
The Quake baseball nine suffered
a 14-1 defeat in the hands of the
strong Kinston team, May 7 at
Griffin Park,
Eobert Dawson, Goldsboro’s lead
ing batter, got two of the five GHS
hits in three trips to the plate. Stal
lings of Kinston got three for five
to lead Kinston. Pollock, B. Powell,
and Wynn got the other three Quake
hits. Haskins of Kinston fanned
10 Quakes in winning his game.

Tracksters Get Third
in State Track Meet
Placing one state champion, the
GHS track squad scored 24 points to
take third place in the State High
School Track Meet at Chapel Hill
April 22. Charlotte and Durham
came from behind in the last events
to w^in first and second places with
28 1-2 and 28 respectively.
Sailing 5 feet 6 1-2 inches into the
air, Terry Pollock, GHS Junior,
won the State Championship in the
high jump. Clifton James placed
second in the 440 and 880 yard
runs. Walker Barr placed third
in the 100 and 220 yard dashes.
Co-captain Dick Daughtry took
two fourts in the 220 yard dash
and the broad jump. Garland
Eich ended third in the shot put.
The relay team, composed of Frank
Farfour, Jim Manly, Maylon Mc
Donald, and Horace Potter, came in
third. Claiborne Pate and Eobert
Thigpen placed third in the javelin
and discus respectively.
LOCALS RUN IN PENN RELAYS
The GHS mile relay tearh com-
I>osed of Co-captains Dees and
Daughtry, Barr and James was the
first N^ortli Carolina school ever to
enter the Penn State Eelays at
Philadelphia, Pennsylvana.
Two hundred high schools from
all over the nation entered the mile
relay. It was run off in heats of
18 each. GHS came sixth in their
section, which, incidentally, was the
fastest of the meet, as the winners
of this heat had a better time than
any other foursome.

Goldsboro’s state champion swim
mers continued their victory march
by whipping Wilmington 51 to 15,
here, April 30. They will go to
Wilmington today, favored to win
by a similar score.
When this column was written,
GHS’s only undefeated pitcher was
Sam Watson. Watson holds two
wins over Mount Olive by scores
of 11-1 and 18-1. In the first game,
he gave two hits, and in the second
only one.
GHS’ other ace hurler, John
Triece, holds the other Quake win
by a 5-2 score over Smithfield.
Gorman Lawrence, Quake first
sacker, is a perfect fielder. ^^Eomeo”
has played eight games and hasn’t
errored yet.
Although the Quake nine have lost
more than they have won, Captain
Floyd McDowell has proved to be a
good field general.
Coach Johnson thinks next year’s
baseball prospects are very good, as
no one on the team graduates.
The GHS relay team, composed
of Co-captains Dees and Daughtry,
Barr and James, set a new record of
8 :35 seconds in the mile relay at the
i)uke Invitational Meet April 17.
The old record was 3 :36.7 seconds
set by Daughtry, Dees., Janies and
McClenny last year. Also in this

The local track team continued
their boast of never having lost a
dual meet, by routing Sanford 7Qi/^
to 15^ at Fetzer Field, Chapel Hill,
April 9. Terry Pollock set a new
school record in the high jump as he
sailed 5 feet 6^/^ inches.
The Quake baseball team dropped
a thrilling 4-3 game to Tarboro
April 16, on the local field. The game
was tied at three all in the ninth, but
Tarboro pushed one across in the
tenth to win.
The Quakes were to play their last
game of the season against Smith
field at Griffin Park Wednesday.
In their 5-2 victory over Smith
field, the Quakes acquired their first
home run of the season as Arnold
Barwick poled one over the left field
wall with a mate on base. Triece
limited Smithfield to three hits in
this game.

Daughtry Highest Scorer of Meet;
Barr Ties Record in Dash;
Junior Team Wins
Goldsboro’s fast cinder team
placed fourth in the fifteenth annual
Civitan Eelays at Greensboro, April
30 with 26 points. Although the
Senior team Avas nosed out in the
final events, the Junior team won
their division with eight points.
Of Goldsboro’s 26 points, D.
Daughtry scored nine for high scorer
of the meet. He took these points
by a first in the 220, second in the
100 and fourth in the broad jump.
In the 100, Barr tied the 10-year-
old record of 10.2 seconds. He also
placed second in the 220. Clifton
James placed third in the 440 yard
run and second in the 880. Terry
Pollock, Goldsboro’s state champion
high jumper, took second in this
event. The medley relay team com
posed of Stith, Farfour, McDonald
and Manly captured fourth place.
In the Junior division, Horace
Potter, who won this event last year,
clipped .4 seconds off the old record
of 9.2. His time was 8.8. The Junior
shuttle relay team, composed of T.
Edgerton, Sapp, Pollock and Potter
took second place in this event to
round out the Goldsboro scoring.
WILSON DEFEATS LOCAL NINE
In a game full of hits, errors, and
runs, Wilson’s eastern North Caro
lina Class A championship base
ball nine whipped the Goldsboro
boys 14-7 at Griffin Park, May 4.
The locals lost by a score of 17-0 at
Wilson,
