PAGE FOUR HI NEWS, JR. May 24, 1937. BOY SCOUTS TttlOOP 1 Millard Bailey, a Freshman at Carolina and a former member of Troop 1, has recently received his Gold Palm. The interest this spring has been centered around patrol contests that will end about June 1. TROC^P 3 Recently Scout Executive George Hamer spoke to the troop about camping. May 15 they went on an over night hike to Camp Tuscarora. Bob Crumpler, Senior Patrol Leader, is the most active scout in the troop. TROOP 4 Troop 4 is now working on woodwork. They have made a table and several whatnots. Jake, Ernest Glisson’s bulldog, is mascot of the troop. Ernest Glisson has received the high honor of being promoted from Senior Patrol Leader to Junior As sistant Scout Master recently. TROOP 5 Troop 5’s patrols held a rally re cently. Mr. J. W. Johnson is the Scoutmaster of this troop, and they hold meeting at the Goldsboro High School twice a week. TROOP 6 Recently at the Court of Honor, Troop 6 lost the Goldsboro District Banner to Troop 1. TROOP 13 Robert Hadley is the new Scout master, Clarence “Icky” Peacock, former Scoutmaster, has resigned. Bob Edwards is Assistant Scout master. They have been practicing for the rally to be held May 27. S, S. NEUSE The S. S. Neuse, with Skipper L. L. Hallman at its head, has 17 members. This is the 27th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Approximately 36 Boy Scouts from Goldsboro will attend the National Jamboree to be held in Washington this summer. Scouts from all over the world are expect ed to attend. They will camp along the Potomac in tents for ten of the best days of their lives. R. T. Cozart, Faison Thompson, and Bill Cobb will attend the World Jamboree in Holland in June. The Sophomore girls that are in the Glee Club are: Hilda Adams, Edna Cole, Carolyn Gross, Mildred Grice, Billie Manly, Christine Per- cise, Dorothy Philips, Christine Padgett, Hilda Smith, Ruth Tolley, Lorena Wellons, Ruth Hinson, and Marjorie Daughtry. A second recital was given by Virginia Modlin on February 6. She also played in Wilmington at the Southeastern District Meeting of the North Carolina Federation of Music, Band is another highlight of the Sophomore class. The sophomores that are in the band are: Mary Frances Barnes, Alma Ball, Robert Bailey, Mary Best, R. T. Cozart, Hugh Dortch, Jack Edgerton, Hart well Graham, Billy Hood, Addison Hawley, Ben Hill, Carolyn Lang ston, Billy McClure, J. R. Nickens, Jack Smith, Lambert Jernigan, Lorena Wellons, Clarence Gudger, Robert Blalock, Essie Lee Roberts, and Arlow Triplet. LOST AND FOUND Pop, pop, sputtered the little gas oline plane of Bobby Hatch and Jimmy Whitaker as it gracefully rose from the Goldsboro airport last Monday in an “out of sight” flight. Students Helen Rogers, director, led the Toadstool Orchestra May 14, when the orchestra entertained G. H. S. students by presenting a concert to them. The members are in Mrs. John Hawley’s seventh grade class Paul Stanley gave two special numbers, first a solo, “Pretty Lit tle Dog” and later, “Nobody’s Darl ing but Mine.” He accompanied himself on his guitar assisted in the last number by Wyatt Carter, who played a Jew’s harp. Walter Chambers played “Little Old Lady” on his harmonica. Zazu Pitts, Greta Garbo, Stepin Fetchit, and Mae West were im personated by the guest imper sonator, Lessie Pratt Mallard. Personnel of the orchestra in cluded: harmonicas, Melvin Ad cock, Walter Chambers, Melton Rose, James Snypes, Lloyd Boy ette, Cecil Forrest. Jews’ Harps: Jack Britt, Edwin Strickland, Dewey Merritt, Wyatt Carter. Bass Drum: Bert James; tenor drum, Charles Wiggins; Jazz- horns, Doris Neal Holland, Nellie Marie Howell. Bells: Dorothy Lancaster, Pene lope Lassiter, Brownie Carraway; Guitars: Paul Stanley, Herbert Wiegand, John Rains, Robert Crumpler. Mrs. Hawley accompanied the orchestra at the piano.
