Highest Heights Attained By Class of *40 (Continued from page 2) Ray Rouse and Lewis Tilgham were new candidates. All four of these were awarded letters. A girls’ swimming team was organ ized that year and Dorene Brown, Ann Dan iels, and Deane Powell were members from the Class of ’40, John Grant was manager of the football team for the ’38-’39 season. The two varsity men who received letters were John Schmidlapp and Horace Potter. Tommy Edgerton, Charlie Boyette, Fate Sas ser, Frank Irwin, Maylon McDonald, Glen- wood Johnson, and Hugh Payne were let- termen of the junior team. Two boys joined the track team, managed by Ike Manly. These were Charles Boyette and Tommy Edgerton. Horace Potter received a letter for playing varsity basketball, and Ed Smith and James Watson were members of the junior basketball team. No girls in the Class of ’40 joined the girls’ basketball team during the ’38 season. The five boys reporting for base ball that spring were T. L. Ginn, Warren Hood, John Grant, Horace Potter, Kenneth Westbrook, and Claud King, Horace being the only one to receive a letter. The band and glee club had several sopho more members: Ike Manly, tenor, represented GHS at the State Music Contest in Greens boro; and Carrie Helen Best was a member of the school sextet. Worn by their many' cares, they now en joyed a well earned vacation, floating on air at the thoughts of being upper classmen when school opened again. CHAPTER THREE It was September, and the dream was real ized; they were upper classmen at last. These sincere but nevertheless jolly juniors lost no time in electing their officers: Martha Best, president; Lamuel Summerlin, vice president; Toni Lupton, secretary; Noah Bass, treasurer; and Jackie Campen, cheer leader. Jimmie Whitaker was appointed co cheerleader by the SA Council later in the year. Miss Mary Langston served as the cap able adviser to this class during the span of its life, from September ’38 to June ’39. Virginia Lee, having been elected in the spring of ’38 to the office as SA secretary, was not without the company of her classmates in Council, as many standing committee chairmen as well as members were from the Junior Class. Virginia Worley was chairman of the cafeteria committee and Gertrude San ford served on the committee. Bill Cobb was a member of the social committee; Sonny Boney, Ike Manly, and Martha Best, mem bers of the athletic committee; Charlie Ma- gill and Billy Hollowell, property committee; Horace Potter, chairman, and Earl Montague, board of elections; Filie Person, bulletin board committee; Mildred Lee, chairman, cheering squad; Helen McClenny, activities committee; Cliff Spruill, finance committee; and Jackie Campen, music committee.
