February 6,1942 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS PAGE THREE BUCKET By Herbert Barbour Well, studes, things have been going fast for the Quakes on the hardwood court, and although the Quakes have had a few tough breaks, they are still up there in the conference standings. Their record shows that they have won five and dropped only three, two of which were to Wilson out of the conference. The only conference set-back came at the hands of the Elizabeth City Yellow Jackets on their home court in an upset which the Quakes could not understand. But nevertheless, the Quakes have beat such top ranking teams as Rocky Mount,, Greenville, and Washington. With a boost in attendance, the Quakes could surely pick up. And it’s up to you studes to give the boys moral support by being pres ent at the forth-coming home games. The cheer leaders are to be congratulated for their fine work at the games which gives the stu dents a chance to participate in organized cheering. This cheering takes place before and during the halves of each game and really helps the players to perform better. Let’s help the players and the cheer leaders by being present at some of the games. How about it? Although it’s a little bit out of season, two of our flashing heroes of the gridiron who have made foot ball history in GHS have picked their choice for an All-Female Fac ulty Football Team from the wo- ' men teachers in GHS. These two potential All-American f o ot b a 11 players are Bud Pate, another of those famous Pate boys, and Bobby Heyward, geometry fiend and an all-round athlete. After careful consideration, they have finally made the selections and had a pretty tough time doing so. There was such an abundance of material that the going got rough; please don’t feel slighted if you are not among those picked because the boys really considered every female teacher here at GHS. So without ado, here are the picks; End Mrs. Rosalind White End Miss Mary Ann Gatch Tackle Miss Mabel Hamer Tackle Miss Clytee Ward Guard Mrs. Clifton H, Bradford Guard Miss Mary Craig Suiter Center.-Miss Martha Mae Glazener Quarterback Miss Sara Falkener Halfback Miss Katherine Kalmar Halfback Miss Lena Taylor Fullback Miss Ida Gordner Coach Miss Cora Fuller Collier Waterwoman Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman Financial Adviser Miss Janie C. Ipock These are the picks and perhaps we can encourage these two bright athletic minded kids (ulp! what am I saying?) to pick an All-Female Faculty basketball team. If you sports minded studes are still sports minded after this session and like these picks, how about letting these boys know? If you like them, we may get them to work some more. ALMOST!! % Earthquakes To Engage Strong Greenville Team There Tonight All the shouting and noise did not help Quakemen Bud Pate (back to camera), Hot Heyward (number 6), and Clyde King (di rectly in front of Pate), to put the ball through the hoop as the Qu^es defeated Roanoke Rapids Jinuary 27. The Quakes went to Wilson on January 2 and were defeated by the Cyclones 38-26 in a non-conference game. Warren led the Quakes with 9 points, while Morton paced the visitors with 12. Tracksters Starting Seasonal Workout Coach J. T. Hilton, GHS track director, has announced that several boys are now working out for track and he hopes to enter these boys in the Inter-Collegiate Track Meet at Chapel Hill in an indoor affair on February 28. He stated that a better track team would probably take shape this spring due to the great number of older and younger boys out for the cinder sport. Bud Pate, Bob Kemp, and Albert Handley are the only returning letter men from last year’s track squad and a great deal will depeiid on these boys. Last year eight letter men who were track participants graduated. They are Izzy Ormond, Russell Johnson, Andy Smith, Tom Dam- eron, Ray Carr, Norwood Kornegay, Paul Starling, and Tommy Edger- ton. Well, that’s all for this issue and I’ll be back again next issue. Until then, come to all the games you can possibly attend and help sup port your team and cheer leaders by cheering when you attend games —so long! Marie King is leading the team in these three games with 43 points, while Snag Hallow is runner up with 24. To open their schedule, the Lady Quakes played hostess to the Wash ington Pam Pack Ladies on Janu ary 13 and were turned back by 25-23 in a thrilling game. Clark of Washington led the victors with 14 tallies, while King of the Lady Quakes was second high with 11 tallies. On January 23 the Lady Quakes again played hostess and the lasses from Kinston defeated the Quake sextet 36-24. Jean Wooten of the victors was the evening’s high scorer with 18 points, while Lois Wooten was runner up with 14 points. “Snag” Hallow was high for the Quakes with 11 points. Jinx Defeated The Lady Quakes finally defeat ed their jinx when they went to New Bern on January -30 and de feated their hostesses 42-16. The New Bern lasses were no match for the GHS girls, and it was GHS all the way. Marie King was the big gun in the Quakes’ attack and scored 23 points, while Lupton of New Bern scored 9 points to lead her team. Meet at Chapel Hill, the Quadrangle Meet at Durham, and during the current season will probably sche dule meets with High Point, Green ville, and Fayetteville. Last year the Quakes made only 5V2 points at the State Meet at Chapel Hill and four of these points were due to Bud Pate, who won first place in the javelin throw. Pate is a returning letter man and will probably play a big part in the shot put, discus, and javelin throw. Even if Coach Hilton doesn’t have such ^ successful track squad this season, with the material he has out he can surely build up a track squad in the next two years. Hei states that young material is the backbone of any squad and he urges all freshmen and sophomores, espe cially, to come out for track. If you have not signed up as yet, there is still plenty of time to do so. The Goldsboro Earthquakes will take on a strong Greenville quintet there tonight in a conference tilt in what will be the second meeting of the season for the two teams, the Quakes coming out on top in the first tilt 26-21. These two teams are the strong est teams in the Northwestern Con ference and this battle is the head liner for the week in the conference. Both teams are battling for con ference honors; the Phantoms and the Quakes have been in the finals of the conference championship for the past three years, all three times the Phantoms having come out on top. This game is more or less a grudge game for the Phantoms, who are out to beat the Quakes at all cost to pay them back for the shellacking the Quakes handed them earlier in the season. Coach Jeffrey has been putting the Quakes through the paces and has been stressing offensive and defensive work. Handling the ball has also been an important factor in practice as well as defensive playing, getting rebounds, and in tercepting passes. Shooting practice has given the squad some confi dence and the Quakes seem pretty well prepared to go at the sound of the whistle. The Quakes who have been push ing their team forward are Clyde King, Bud Pate, Hot Heyward, and Rusty Nickens. In the past few games Rusty has been the bright tar witl\ his side court shots. King’s work on the offensive and defensive is notable and Pate’s and Heyward's* work on the defense is a credit to these boys. Nickens seems to have been the needed spark in the past few games and he may be in there tonight at start. Quakes Win From Tarboro The Goldsboro Earthquakes boys and girls basketball squads defeat ed the lads and lassies from Tar boro Tuesday night here at the local gym, the boys winning 37-21 and the girls winning 31-26. King and Kannan were the high scorers for the night with 8 points apiece while Culbertson and Hey ward were the outstanding defen sive stars for the Quake boys.
