DOPE BUCKET
by Ed Strickland
Now that baseball season is in
full swing, maybe we’ll have tem
porary end to that never ending
complaint “There’s nothing to do.”
In their first three games of the
current season the Quake nine
have dropped two and taken one.
Their two losses were to E. M. I.
The next one was with Rocky
Mount, 12-9. The first Quake vic
tory came from Durham.
Gene Summerlin pitched a spark
ling nine inning shut out for a 4-0
victory. Gene’s excellent pitching
seemed to be an incentive to the
rest of the Quakes, for they backed

him to the limit.
The Quakes have quite a few
promising hitters this season. We
note home i*uns in the Rocky
Mount game that were poled by
Harvey Gentry, Carlton Frederick,
and Billy Ruffin. Hugh Pope is
another premising star at the
plate.
With more pitching by Summer
lin it looks like the Quakes can
make a success of their spring
campaigns.
We have been noticing the grid-:
iron squad as they go through
their spring training, too. Even
with the loss of many of last year’s
lettermen, GHS should be able to
look forward to the fall season of
football. The line, with Allen,
Bell, Griswold, Hinnant, Best,
Davis, and others, should average
around 175 pounds.
Let’s all get together at the
games and show the team that
we’re behind them.
Coach Norris Jeffrey, Coach at

of ten years, has announced his
resignation as head coach to be
come effective June 11, 1948.

Goldsboro.

date consists of 83 wins as against
45 losses. His record in Goldsboro
is 54 wins to 34 losses.
Now 38 years old. Coach received
his master’s degree in Physical
Education in 1941, from the Uni
versity of North Carolina. He
graduated from State College in
1930 after winning S Varsity let
ters.
Among his records Coach holds
3 North Carolina Conference foot
ball championsljips in 1938, 1940,
and 1944, and an undefeated sea
son in 1937, and also a Class A
