DOPE BUCKET by Ed Strickland Now that baseball season is in full swing, maybe we’ll have tem porary end to that never ending complaint “There’s nothing to do.” In their first three games of the current season the Quake nine have dropped two and taken one. Their two losses were to E. M. I. The next one was with Rocky Mount, 12-9. The first Quake vic tory came from Durham. Gene Summerlin pitched a spark ling nine inning shut out for a 4-0 victory. Gene’s excellent pitching seemed to be an incentive to the rest of the Quakes, for they backed Coach Norris Jeffrey Quits As Football Coach At GHS him to the limit. The Quakes have quite a few promising hitters this season. We note home i*uns in the Rocky Mount game that were poled by Harvey Gentry, Carlton Frederick, and Billy Ruffin. Hugh Pope is another premising star at the plate. With more pitching by Summer lin it looks like the Quakes can make a success of their spring campaigns. We have been noticing the grid-: iron squad as they go through their spring training, too. Even with the loss of many of last year’s lettermen, GHS should be able to look forward to the fall season of football. The line, with Allen, Bell, Griswold, Hinnant, Best, Davis, and others, should average around 175 pounds. Let’s all get together at the games and show the team that we’re behind them. Coach Norris Jeffrey, Coach at Goldsboro High School for a period of ten years, has announced his resignation as head coach to be come effective June 11, 1948.
