See how many you can GHS—54, Rocky Mt.—35 Louis Hallow’s scoring prow ess again led the way for the Quakes in their February 10 struggle with Rocky Mount in which the locals came out on top 54-35. The game was floored in William Street Gym. Hallow scored 18 points as the Quakes easily outdistanced the visitors, with Ronald Percise coming through with 13. Hugh Laughridge was the high man for the visitors with 11 points. The Quakes led the luckless Blackbirds from the start and the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Durham—74, GHS—56 Goldsboro’s Quakes had the misfortune of catching the Dur ham Bulldogs on a “hot” night and as a result, the Quakes came home from the Bull City with a 74-56 licking staring them in the face. Coach Paul Sykes’ towering cigarette city team hit on 70 per cent of their shots in the contest with big Sam Nichols leading the way with 24 points, most of them on tip-ins. The Quakes’ percentage was also bet ter than their usual perform ances but they couldn’t keep up with the fast traveling Bulldogs. Runner-up to the big Nichols in the scoring race was teammate Albert Long with 16 tallies, with Hal Bowden and Harry Lloyd coming through with 12 apiece. The Quakes’ scoring was ev enly divided among the players with Ronald Percise leading the pack with 13 points. William Bell and G. F. Seymour tallied 12 each and Louis and Junior Hallow came through with 10 and nine respectively. Wilm ington—63, Goldsboro—37 Coach Leon Brogden’s unde feated Wilmington Wildcats made their game with the Quakes February 17 little more than a formality as they spared no mer cy in racking up a 63-37 win ov er the locals in William Street Gym. All-State Guard Charles Niven of the Port City crew led the point-happy Wildcats in their scoring splurge with 17 points, but he was hard-pressed for the scoring honors by teammate Jere Hilburn, who burned the nets with 16. The Wildcats’ All- American footballer, Francis Fredere, used his heighth to good advantage as he scored 14 points, as did six-four Marian Hales who tallied 11. Walnut Phone 577 GHS—58, Wilson—57 Thanks to the inaccuracy of Billy Lyles, Wilson’s All-State forward, at the free throw line, the Quakes came out with a win in one of the biggest upsets of the hoop season when they squeezed past the Cyclones 58-57 in William Street Gym February 7. Lyles missed two free throws which could have won the game for the visitors after the final whistle and altogether he missed eight during the course of action in the Eastern AA contest. Louis Hallow of the Quakes and Gilbert Ferrell of the Cy clones shared the scoring honors for the night with 22 points apiece and Billy Tomlinson car ried off the runner-up laurels with 18 tallies. William Bell’s 13 points were second high for Goldsboro. Followers of the GHS football squad will get a preview of the 1950 Earthquakes grid squad to night when the annual Senior- Varsity game will be reeled off in the stadium. Members of the football squad during the ’49 season who will graduate this spring will form the Senior squad in the second annual spring meeting of the two clubs. Last spring in the in itial contest the Seniors proved to be better mudders than the regulars and left the rain-drench ed field with a 7-6 victory. Kenneth Allen and William Bell, co-captains for the coming season, will lead the Varsity in their quest for revenge and will be backed up by R. L. Gurley, Bud Davis, Donald Percise, Lou is Hallow, Arlei McCarter, Bob by Watson and Bobby Frederick with several newcomers to the Varsity expected to take a prom inent part in the proceedings - against the seniors. If expectations run to form, then the power laden Senior crew will experience no little trouble in gunning for their sec ond win over the Varsity altho they can claim the backbone of the ’49 team. Wearing the col ors of the seniors will be Love lace Bell and Junior McRoy, Goldsboro’s second team All- Eastern AA conference team members last year, Hugh Shine, Moe Best, Sonny Gainey and several others who have been members of Quake squads in years past. ; Violinist— (Continued from page one) inist and teacher, Ivan Golam- ian.
