Bobby Frederick’s long await
ed slugging power came into ac
tual being May 9 when the
Earthquakes racked up an 8-7
win over Wilmington’s fast-fad-
ing Wildcats.
Frederick, who led the Quake
batters with two hits, a single
and a home run, chased home
the tying and A^inning runs in
the eighth inning of the Eastern
AA game played in Wilmington
with a long drive that rolled
deep into the far reaches of the
fenceless left field. The blow
scored Ronald Percise, who had
walked, and gave Frederick time
to score to give Quake reliefer
William Bell the win.
In a five-inning relief stint,
the Quake ace gave up five hits,
struck out seven and gave up no
bases on balls.
Five Quake hitters, Frederick,
Bill Charlton, Ronald Percise,
Donald Percise, and W. D. Gur
ley, had two hits.

Wilson 7, Goldsboro 3
In a game played May 3 in
Wilson’s Municipal Stadium, the
Cyclones of Charles L. Coon
High School proved to be better
mudder than the Earthquakes as
they racked up an important 7-3
win over William Bell and his
G.H.S. teammates.
Goldsboro’s early 3-0 lead was
swallowed up in the third and
fifth innings after a nightmare
performance by the Quakes who
let the Cycs score two runs in
the third and three in the fifth.
The bi gfactor in the Cyc win
was Bell’s wildness. The Quake
ace struck out 13 but he issued
11 walks to the Cycs who also
came through with seven hits.

Fayetteville’s luckless Bulldogs
fell before the Earthquakes 10-2
in an Eastern AA game played
May 4 in Goldsboro’s Municipal
Stadium with Donald Percise
pitching the win for the Quakes.
The Quakes’ fast start on
pitcher Sammy Harris was too
much for the visitors to over
come and with Donald pitching
good baseball, the cellar-dwell
ing Bulldogs didn’t have a
chance.
Goldsboro’s seven hits includ
ed two by William Bell, both
singles, with G. F. Seymour and
W. D. Gurley contributing extra
base blows.

Pitcher William Bell of the
Quakes had two men down in
the last inning and a 3-2 count
on Roland Lashley in the May 12
game played in Municipal Sta
dium but the Raleigh shortstop
picked on the next toss by Bell
for a clean single through the
hole between short and second
for the only hit of the game pick
ed up by the visiting Capitals,
who lost the game in the last of
the ninth when G. F. Seymour
drilled a single in left center to
plate Bobby Frederick, who had
walked.
Bell’s near no-hit performance
was marred by his own wildness
in the eighth inning when he
walked seven man, six of them
consecutively, to give the Caps
life in a game in which they
trailed the entire distance. All
in all. Bell walked 11 and struck
out 11.
Wilson 7, Goldsboro 2
Coach Irv Dickens’ Wilson Cy
clones clinched the Eastern AA
baseball title May 15 in Golds
boro’s Municipal Stadium when
they took a 7-2 decision off the
Quakes who were taking their
last chance at a tie for the loop
bunting.
The well balanced Cyclones,
who will meet Gastonia for the
State title, led all the way in the
game and despite the fact that
the Quakes were getting runners
on the bases, they played good
defensive 'ball and left 16 Quakes
stranded on the basepaths.
Paced by Luther McKeel, who
came through with a single and
a double in three trips to the
plate, the Cyclones scored their
winning tally in the fifth inning
when McKeel walked, weni to
second on another walk, con
tinued to third on an outfield
fly and scored on a wild pitch by
William Bell.
Ed Vinson was the only Quake
batter to get more than one hit.
The slender leftfielder beat out
two infield hits for a pair of
singles.
