Royal Essay
What Next? This was the
topic which caused many nights
of anguish and suffering for the
Seniors during the last two or
three weeks. For this was the
title of their cherished Senior es
say! Two thousand words was
the assigned word limit. “What
Next?” was so indefinite that it
covered the vast field of any
thing and everything. Many
were centered around both.
All Seniors are required as a
part of their regular English
course to suffer through what is
known as their Senior Essay a
title which gives no allusion to
the many hours of brain toil and
finger cramp. It’s main purpose
is to stimulate creative individ
ual writing. An award of $10 is
made on commencement night to
the senior whose essay is judged
best from the entire class. That
is the Royall Essay prize which
has been presented for the past
thirty years. It is awarded in
memory of the late G. C. Royall,
a pioneer citizen of Goldsboro.
Some of the past years’ win
ning essay titles have been, “My
Debating Career in High School”,
“Observation of a News Boy”,
“Bullfrogging” and “I Met My
Kin”. Those of this year ranged
from “The Vitamin World” and
“Russion and American Battles”
to “The Coming Black Stove”
and “The School Goes Modern”.
A group of G.H.S. students who have recently joined the Golds
boro Civil Air Patrol squadron are shown above. Left to right
are: Walter Stanfield, Richard Jones, Jack Houser, Thad Jurkie-
wicz, Jean Rackly, Jane Buie, Barbara Keith, Mary Anne Green,
and Dot Wall. ..This cadet program was introduced in G.H.S. at a
recent assembly and is available to boys and girls between the
ages of 15 and 18. (News-Argus staff photo)

A touching and heartwarming
scene was recently portrayed on
the frontt lawn and walks of
GHS. The seniors were giving
the underclassmen a touch of
the graduation spirit as they
presented a sham graduation
ceremony, after having finished
a lovely picnic lunch.
The senior class song was sung
as the members of the graduat
ing class loyally stood at atten
tion. Sensing that the song gain-
not the respect it deserved dur
ing the first singing, it was sung
again for emphasis.
The song and picnic alone
seemed not enough to satisfy
the underclassmen. So as not to
disappoint them the class lined
up behind its president and hap-

Have you heard “The Hit Pa

popular music ranked last Sat

1. My Foolish Heart.
2. It Isn’t Fair.
3. Third Man Theme.
4. If I Knew You Were Coming

5. Sentimental Me.
6. Dearie.
7. Bewitched.
A popular tune around Golds

pily went through the freedom
cups — the graduation march.
Mock tears were shed by the se
niors, and the underclassmen
sorrowfully and respectfully
loaned the seniors their hankies,
but only after they had shed a
few tears themselves.
“Farewell to Thee” was sung
by the seniors and “We’re Sorry
to See You Go” was sung to
them by the kids. As the cere
mony sorrowfully came to an
end the seniors flocked to the
auditorium where they could
sing to their hearts’ content. But
by an indecent and unthoughful
prank of the kids the doors were
closed, and thus “Open The
Door, Richard” seemed appro
priate.
Spring To A Senior
By Ruth Forehand
Beautiful Spring, so warm and
so fair;
With breezes that rob the curls
from your hair.
The tempting rays sent down by
the sun
Make us wish the next weeks
were over and done.
The flowers are blooming, the
buds bursting out;
If June doesn’t hurry “Have
mercy” we’ll shout.
Spring is the season, many times
it hath been said.
When thoughts all turn to love.
But love for Seniors will all be
dead.
If they don’t hit 70 or above.
It’s
