Wilmington Plays Host
Delegates Attend Convention
Four delegates from the Romo-
noca chapter of the National
Honor Society brought back ex
cellent reports and memories of a
wonderful time at the state con
vention in Wilmington, April 14-
16.
Arriving in Wilmington Thurs
day afternoon, the delegates re
gistered, after which they were
the guests of the New Hanover
high school at a buffet supper in
the school union. Friday morn
ing at opening session, Jane
Hatchett, one of the local dele
gates, gaive the response to the
opening welcome given by leaders
in the city of Wilmington, the
state president of the National
Honor Society, and members of
the New Hanover chapter of the
NHS.
After lunch, Friday, discussion
groups were conducted, with many
interesting topics up for discus
sion—all of thee pertaining to
teen-age problems. Friday after
noon, all delegates were guests at
Service On Air
Some of the numerous ways in
which the Service club helps the
school were brought out in a re
cording heard over “The School
Of The Air” program, Fi’iday,
April 15.
A second recording had to be
made because in the first a train
whistle had a starring part. The
second recording was made after
school. This time only the mem
bers who had said something on
the previous recordings were pre
sent.
Every member of the organiza
tion had his name on the radio—
when the roll was called by Au
drey Kennedy. Since Billy McIn
tyre was the only boy present for
the second recording, he had to
change his voice and answer for
each of the boys as the roll was
checked.
“The School Of The Air” pro
gram comes over WCEC. It is
sponsored by the parents, teach
ers and the Junior Chamber of
Commerce Education committee
for the purpose of acquaintance
to the public with actual situa
tions in the classroom and other
school activities.
a beach party at Wrightsville.
Saturday morning was climaxed
with the election of the new state
officers and the selection of a
meeting place for next year.
The social side was high-light
ed when the delegates were treat
ed to a banquet at the “Famous
Club” on Friday night (steak
supper!) and an informal break
fast at the “Mariner” at Wrights
ville on Saturday!
Those attending the convention
from here were Jane Hatchett,
Tommy Vaughn, Joyce Harris,
and Julian Aldridge.
3 One-Act Plays
To End Season
“A Marriage Proposal” by An-
‘ton Chekov has been selected by
the Edsonions and the Black Mas
quers to be given with the contest
plays, “The Stonn” by Donald
Payton and “Gloria Mundi” by
Patricia Brown.
Although “A Marriage Propo
sal” is one of the oldest plays ever
written, it also is one of the fun
niest ever to be given in this
school.
The characters are Henry
Thompson as Mr. Steponavitch,
the father of Natalia Stepona
vitch, played by Myra Floyd; but
the most interesting part is that
of Ivan Vassilivitch, executed by
Foy Bradshaw who makes love
to Myi'a.
This is the only time the SE
contest plays will be given to a
Rocky Mount audience and these
are the last of the series of Ed-
sonian and Black Masquers pro
ductions for this year.
The purpose of the presenta
tion is to raise money to help the
Edsonians.

TEACHEY WOMBLE
OUTSTANDING LADIES’
READY TO WEAR
125 Nash Street
“The show must go on” but it
can’t go on with just actors; it
takes a backstage crew, someone
at the technical end of it all.
Everytime the stage is used
there is someone backstage keep
ing the mike under control, some
one to work the lights and some
one to pull the curtains. At the
high school there are four boys
who are always on the job for
assemblies, class meetings or even
after school programs. These boys
are Graham Adams, Tommy Pat
ton, Foy Bradshaw and Heni-y
Thompson, each having specific
jobs to do and knowing how to do
them. When one of these is ab
sent Gene “Spank” Arnold,
George Dixon or Steve Proctor
fills in.
All of the boys were strangers
to the backstage at the beginning
of the school year, but their work
in dramatics has given them in
struction in technical equipment.
Each boy has served for one or
more of the EDO’s major produc
tions this year. During “Blithe
Spirit,” Henry was sound techni
cian and Graham helped with the
lights. For “Ladies in Retirement”
Foy was the sound technician and
Graham was stage manager with
Tommy helping him.
