Included in that record is one state 4-A runner-up and three third place finishes in the state. The southern-drawling 47 year- old cage coach was born in Erwin, Tennessee, and after attending East Tennessee State College, where he played baisketball for four yea:r, he started his coaching career in his hometown in 1938. Leaving the Navy in 1946, Lundy came to Rocky Mount, and with great success he has re mained. Rocky Mount has suffered only five losing seaspms since Lund^^ came here. Commenting on some of his best teams, Lundy said, “of course I would have to say that last year’s squad which went further than any Rocky Mount basketball team in the school’s history, is one of the best I’ve ever coached. “My 1954 team, which won the conference champ ionship and finished third in the sta£te, was another real fine team. The team, headed by Joe Lan caster, compiled the best overall record i»ve jenjoyed at Senior High. In talking about individual stars he has coached Lundy said, “It would be impossible to name one boy as the best I’ve ever coached. If I had to name what I con sider as the best five boys'-I’ve coached, excluding boys now playing, they would be Don Stallings at center, Joe Lancaster and Charlie Landen at forwards, Haywood Evans and Harold Gil bert at guards.” Rocky Mount Blackbirds To Travel To Virainia For Two Caqe Clashes Rocky Mount’s Senior High Blackbirds journey December 14th to Roanoke, Virginia to play a basketball twin bill.
