Therefore, many of them tip toe to the kitchen to eat their Rice Krisples trying not to wake th^ rest of the family. Our eight bus drivers cover a 1 1/2 or more radius of the Rocky Mount area from the high school. They have decided to give up dating all girls for a certain length of time. In facing this sacrifice, it is necessary to be cogni zant of the advantages that will be reaped. The following are four basic advantages: it con tributes to better mental, phy sical, and spiritual health; it helps to curb inflation; it bet ters the ecology cycle by reduc ing pollution; it gives one more time to read or watch TV or to utilize other constructive out lets, “The person is more alert and his mental attitude is bet ter," remarked one fellow. “He doesn’t have to worry about opening doors, snowing the par ents or puttingupwith his date’s six year old sister's karate chops." Students wait faithfully at their stop until one of these guys drives the bus over and stops at the curb, grinning hel lo. What are the qualifications of a RMSH bus driver? He must procure a license. This ob tained by attending a three day course at Northern Nash and by scoring well on a two-day driving test. The bus driver devotes a lot of time to their jobs even at these early hours. A normal schedule is as fol- Givlng up girls on Friday and Saturday nights is lone ly, but it indirectly strengthens our U. S. economy. The boy is not forced to spend the extra dollar for milkshakes, movies, or dances. Thus, inflation is curbed. Is non-dating indirectly help ing out the anti-pollution camp aigns across the globe? Yes. Half the mufflers’ output would be radically stopped, The boy uses up 3 or 4 gallons of gas, simply by picking up his date, going to the Cameo, Center or Booker T., returning to his date’s house and then riding home. More time could be spent reading “The Hobbit", “Moby Dick", and “Silas Marner"— the all-time classics. Thus, the person could receive a more well-rounded education. All points considered, the greatest advantage of not dat ing, is the greater apprecia tion of dating when this ridicu lous notion is proven false. Buses lows: Wake up at 6:30 First stop at 7:45 Arrival at RMSH at 8:15 Get home at 4:30 What was the most difficult thing for the drivers to adjust to? “The gears. It’s turning the bus around the corner that’s especially hard because you’ve got to remember that a bus is alot longer than a car.” John ny Powell thoughtfully remark ed, “It’s putting up with people telling you how to drive. Jab bering and all. The driver has a responsibility of the chil dren’s lives in the bus,’’Some one else remarked, “you meet alot of crazy people.” The fellows admitted that considering all pros and cons the bus driving job is worth while. The bud driver’s pay is sufficient and he is provided with free transportation to and from school. Though it Is nerve-racking, driving the buses Is actually fun. Withsome thirty odd students riding—the driver is constantly looking through the front mirror and attempting to calm the juven iles down. Frequently the bus breaks down or someone is late some where. The intercom drones, “Bus No, 27 has just arrived. Please admit these students to first period class.” But if all systems are go, buses R-23, R-27, R-47, R-35, R-6, R-76, R-1 and R-4 will continue to run. The Phalanx, Boost er, Service and Kudos Clubs will be included in the following issues. The Good Sports Club has faithfully upheld the tradition of selling “beat the other team” ribbons on the morning of foot ball and basketball games. Girls can be seen standing in the lobby, in the student com mons or running down the hall selling another ribbon to boost school spirit. Viewing the many projects that the Good Sports Club un dertakes, one realizes that the personality of the girls must be super-energetic for the club to be so active. During football season, the girls drove over to the Munici pal Stadium armed with crepe paper and ladders. They fear lessly climbed on the 20 ft. goalpost and carefully wrapped each bar. For Homecoming, the club sold bright, yellow mum cor sages. Winning first place in the parade made all the work and fun that went into It just a lit tle bit more worthwhile. For Christmas, this service club selected a needy family and delivered clothes, toys and staple food to their home. In the school’s lobby, a tree was decorated and windowpanes frosted. During basketball season, the group went so far as to roast 100 pounds of peanuts. Today, several roasted peanuts remain in the back of Mrs. Bell’s room. “Fruit baskets" (a bas ket with bananas, apples, roast ed peanuts) were delivered to the visiting tiasketball team as a token of hospitality. The Good Sports Club is a shining example of how bene ficial a service club can be. For this group has realized that true satisfaction results not from recognition but service.
