Page 6 THE GRYPHON Friday. March 5, 1971 RMSH Batmen Open Up The 16 Spring Sports Debut Coming Up The Gryphons are but 11 days from their first game and have been rushing to meet and be ready for the opening game. Rocky’s Mount weak spot will be pitching as only one veteran ace, Charles Bell, is back this year. All other positions seem to look good with two or three boys fighting for the starting signal. Hitting, which is always a question, will never have it’s answer until the first of the game. Rocky Mount has some fine hitters in Sonny Wooten, Mike Ruffin, Pete Thompson, Mike Hines, Mike Jacobs and Randy Warrick. If pitching comes through for Rocky Mount this year, it could mean a championship for the Gryphons. Rocky Mount’s strong competition will again be Kinsto(i, last year’s champs. Wilson seems to be the only team to offer Rocky Mount any competition, outside of Kinston. Rocky Mount has some fine sophomores in Sonny Wooten, Randy Warrick, James Lewis and future ace Larry Daugh- tridge. C. lee Coaches Guion Davis and Walt Wiggins will guide the RMSH trackmen this year. SPORT LIGHTS By MKE RUFFIN Overall attendance at athletic events has been on the decline ever since football has ended. It has reduced sharply during basketball season. With the arrival of spring sports on the scene students are encouraged to watch fre quently the numerous sports of track, tennis, and baseball. The track team this year is expecting to be ranked high in the state since they have a lot of veterans returning. This years tennis team is expecting to find competition rough but are hoping for an im proved season. The baseball team is expect ing to be in contention for the state title this year with the help of 13 veterans from last year. Hardy Sets Record Lewis Hardy, a two year var sity forward here at senior high has set a scoring record with the most points in a varsity career. Hardy took the title away from Mitchell Wiggins, who Is now playing for Liv ingston College in a starting role. Not Too Long Not long from now, many students will be roaming the shores of North Carolina. These students are the "Eas ters Holiday Brigade” which Invades the beach once each year. Within one month, these stu dents will be once again migrat ing due to warm weather in hopes of a surfer’s paradise or a lover's dream. PH be there. RMSH Thinclads Looking Forward To Good Year This years track team has much potential but that potential must turn into performance for this team to be champions, The Gryphon’s track team has some of the finest runners in the ■state and could win if everybody would work and get a winning at titude. Thus far this season the attitude has been good and Rocky Mount seems to be once again thinking about possibili ties of a statp berth or even a championship. The Gryphon’s have some fine coaches in Guion Davis and Walt Wiggins. Davis seems to believe that his team has a good shot in the Division n standings but that their hopes may be blasted when they enter the sectionals and face a tough Fayetteville Smith High track team. With Carlester and the crew from Wilson gone, the Rocky Mount’s chances of a champion ship seem to be much better than they were last year, Wil son was Rocky Mount’s tough est opponent last year and it was always a good meet to see these two teams go at it. The thinclads of RMSH have some fine veterans returning and this experience encourages to exert full time to winning a championship. Dennis Jones Is perhaps Rocky Mount’s best performer along with Dwight “Tootle” Battle, Walt Sherrod, Tim Brinn, Gray Capps Wayne Mercer, James Ray Mitchell, and Deacon Jones.
