Gryphs Fall To Greenville In First Conference Tilt Held to only five liits by Greenville’s Stanley Cobb, the Rocky Mount baseball squad came home empty-handed after a trip to Greenville in quest of their first division win. The Rampant squad won by a 6-0 margin. A double play ended any Rocky Mount threat in the first inning, when Larry Daughtridge and Sonny Wooten walked. Randy Wunderlich slammed a line drive to second baseman John Barwick, who quickly started the double play. Larry Daughtridge retired the side in order in the first inning, but with one out in the top half of the second, the sit uation changed. With Barwick of Greenville on base by a walk, after which Larry Dixon struck out. Derrick Dunn hit a single into right field. Daughtridge walked the next man to load the bases. Jim McDermott came to the plate and blooped a single into center field. Wunderlich charged in, hopefullytoscoopup the ball and throw it homeward to prevent another run. But he by-passed the ball, and all three runners scored as re sult of the mishap. The other three Greenville runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Derrick Dunn triggered the action with a single, although he was pick ed off at first by Daughtridge. With the next hitter walking, Robbie Cox came to bat and singled to put runners on first and third, A double by McKin ney scored both runners, Mc Kinney then scored as a result of ^bb’s single to center field. Warrick Stranded Randy Warrick was moved into scoring position in the sixth, when he singled and was moved to second on a passed ball. McCullough popped out, though, to suppress the possi ble rally. Rocky Mount had two men on in the seventh, also, but Cobb worked himself out of the jam to preserve the shutout victory for the rampants.
