Dr. Currin Attends Division Winter Conference
Dr. Ben F. Currin, Superin
tendent of Rocky Mount City
Schools, attended the North Ca
rolina Association of Educa
tors’ Winter Conference of the
Superintendents Division in
Durham December 5-7 at the
Durham HoteL
During the conference, which
was attended by superintendents
from all over the state, the prin
cipals heard various speakers
from throughout the state and
nation speak on the changing
roles of the state and federal
government toward education.
The leadoff address was ma
de by Lieutenant Governor - el
ect James Hunt, who spoke to
the group on the first day of the
conference. The keynote ad-
dresss, “Signs of the Times,”
was delivered by Dr. A. Craig
Phillips, State Superintendent.
The conferencewasoneoftwo
yearly held under the auspices
of the North Carolina Associa
tion of Educators.
“The main purpose of the
conference,” the local superin
tendent stated, “was for the su
perintendents to get an idea of
the trends and goals of educa
tion both state-wide and nation
ally and the effect of the elec
tion on our local system,” Dr,
Currin also brought up the point
that many factions disagree with
the primary goals of education,
such as the state andtheNCAE,
“And of course,” he continued,
“we haven’t had a Republican
governor In our seventy years.”
While on the trip, the super
intendent also dropped In on the
State Board of Controls to ap
peal the ruling putting Rocky
Mount in a new conference
alignment athletically. “Unfor
tunately, the request was de
nied, but we do feel we have
scheduled many of the teams we
had wished to play anyway.
We do play teams from Raleigh
and Durham, for example, and
we still have one open date.”
While at the conference. Id
eas were examined as to the
behavior of the GeneralAssem-
bly and their views toward ed
ucation. The superintendent st
ated many legislators feel vo
cational education is the main
priority, while many feel kin
dergarten and elementary edu
cation should be examined more
thoroughly.
