PAGE 4 THE GRYPHON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1973 SOUL EXPLOSION by Brenda and William Hitman, Trouble Man, Me linda sound familiar don’t they? Black movies are now Invading the cinema screens throughout Rocky Mount. With the help of Brenda Barnes, we have com piled some of the comments of some of our Black students on “How do you dig Black mov ies?” Groove on! Diane Dancy “I really digthe black movies that are being filmed, and I usually try to see every one that comes to Rocky Mount.” Phil Ford “I think they are real hip. It is time that Black actors have a chance to excell in the movie world. I enjoy watching them very much.” Norma Petway “The Black movies that are becoming more known in this area are very interesting and enjoyable. It gives society a more clear picture of the Black man and woman. Pm more than pleased with most of them but a few of them I could chan ge some parts,” Thomas Moore “I think that the role of Black people in society today is be coming more apparent because of the Black movies. Youths, who go out and see these mo tion pictures are learning the do’s and don’ts about life, and are judging themselves accor dingly,” Caroline Wiggins "The Black movies coming to Rocky Mount are more of a let down. Some of the movies show black men as being dope push ers, Loving “White” women, wearing bad clothes, living in big houses, and even have own ed a private club, “For Blacks Only.” Black men are respec ted regardless of whatever their role. They make the films. The audience is sometimes a- ware of how these black male\ actors live their lives on stage ' and off stage. These movies don’t show the black women as “woman,” She portrays roles as a push over, for the black male. In one particular film the black woman was respect ed. She played as a “lady”. Black women need to be seen for what they are and not as just a fill in when the “white” Mrs. AUm KnlgM (teft)udMn. ElteDayls check orer last min ute plans for Reaccredltatlon. woman is not around. Alphonso McKnight “Black movies are what’s happening now. Every time you turn around there’s a new Black movie to see, and that’s cool. It really makes me feel good to see a brother in a iro- vle with rags that just can’t wait, a pad that every chick tries to get into, and an El Dorado that every man tries to steal. So I hope stars such as Jim Brown, a one time foot ball star who hasn’t stopped scoring yet, Ron O’Neal, the coolest pusherman around, and Richard Roundtree, a man with a big score, keep on making movies in the way that har monize the public. Banquet To Honor Reaccreditation Of R. M. High School The reaccreditation banquet to honor those who have put many long hours Into reaccre ditation will be held Feb, 20th, 1973. Some of those invited are the reaccreditation committee, RMSH faculty, the Mayor, Mr, Sam Gray, Mr, Bob Williams, RMSH secretaries and teachers aide, Mrs, Elks, Mr, Clarence, Mr, Neal Chafln and the chair man Education Committee of Commerce, Hors d’ouvres will be ser ved in the home-ec department from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be prepared by the cafeteria staff and will be served by student volunteers starting at 6:30, Quiet background music will be provided and the invoca tion will be lead by Dr, Leh man. The program of the banquet will consist of a welcome by Mr, Newbern, Introductions, and remarks by Chairman of the Board of Education, consul tants and committee chairman. The entertainment will spark the evening with a dramatic skit by RMSH drama students and a poem by Miss Murchison. Lunchroom Changes Greatly Appreciated When everyone came back to school at the first of the year, the newly painted bri^t yellow cafeteria was barely recog nized. As the days passed by, the atmosphere in the lunch room became brighter. The three lunch lines are one of the major improvements, but also the students seem to ac cept the responsibilities of cleaning off the tables and clearing away the trays (with a little help from teachers). There are still a few problems with “Hurried Harries” and “Frantic Frances” breaking in line and a few “elite Ellens” who think they are too good to remove their trays. Mr, Hi nes has reprimanded a few of these “elite Ellens” and tur ned them into “happy helpers,” Looking on the brighter side of things, an obvious reason for improvement in the lunchroom is the lunch ladies. They al ways wear a smile and try to be very helpful. INTEGON Tor Your Insurance Needs' 1901 Sunset Ave. 442-0643 When You Run Out, Run In Zip Mart 5 Neighboriiood Locations in Rocky Mount 700 N.
