The Vocational Industrial Club of America is the youth organization for trade, indus trial, technical, and health students. The week honoring the Vica organization offered a good opportunity for students to. look into a future as a skilled craftsman or technician through programs at RMSH. All of this proves that there is a bright future ahead for those prepar ing for a future job in more than one hundred skilled oc cupations. Students are urged to look into the Vica program because who knows - you may be doing yourself a favor! f Mffmmnm m w s-iz mm Pictured above are Myra Fisher, Chuck Rehm, David Jones, and Debra Hopkins, Girls Show Their G)nsideration For Boys During Twirp Week Serendipity What is serendipity? It is what you find when you are looking for something else. The word was invented by Ho race Walpole in 1754, He based it on the Persian fairy tale a- bout three princes from Seren- dip. The princes went ona jour ney expecting the usual. In stead, they found valuables they had not sought. Serendipity, then, invoh^es that which is not expected, that which is not obvious, that which is important in the unimportant. Indeed, failure, carefully stu died and analyzed can be a.s valuable, perhaps more valu able, than success. Alexander Graham Bell, for instance, was trying to Improve the telegraph. An accident occurred and he discovered what was to become the tele phone . , . Fleming discovered penlc'llin because some of his plate cultures of staphylocci became contaminated ,,, Roen tgen found X-rays by noticing a black line on a sheet of paper, produced when he passed cur rent through a tube , , , Steam blew cork out of a bottle and Oliver Evans conceived the possibility of the steam engine. All these are examples of serendipity. But the idea resulted only be cause each man had created his own individual conditions to see, not only with two eyes, but also with that third eye: the magic eye of imagination which is based on an accumulation of learning. The new idea, the flash of inspiration comes to those who have learned the obvious and then can see the different. Be prepared for your bit of serendltplty: Learn all there is to know in whatever field you choose. Serendipity awaits. The young men were fascinated when the girls opened doors for them, shar pened pencils, carried books, and did many other things that the boys ordinarily would do. Concluding “Twirp Week”, there was a spring dance in the gym. The girl had to ask the boys, and this gave the girl a chance to ask the fellow of her choice. The students were en tertained by a group called “Jasper” formally known as the "Brass Parks.” The band played all the latest records and all he students had a great time —thus ending Twirp Week. The SRA met on Tuesday, March 6, and discussed many interesting things concerning what will be going on in the near future and what has already taken place. The SRA was happy to re port that the surveys taken in the homerooms that discuss ed ways in which a RMSH stu dent couW improve his school were pretty good overall, A question that appeared on the survey was, ‘Have you ever tin kered with narcotics?” The SRA members were pleased to find that over 85 per cent of the stu dents had not. SRA members also Invited students who were really inter ested in their school to come to the next SRA meeting. The members made it clear that a student was not to come just to get out of class, but if he was really interested in the school’s affairs, he would be welcomed. The spring dance was also discussed. The SRA thought it was best to limit visitors to those attending the school. The dance will be casual, but no jeans of any kind will be allow ed, It is suggested that a young man wear a tie. “The luxury of doing good surpasses every other personal enjoyment.” — John Gay Sea King Fish Market 837 Fails Rd. 442-0757 W.
