(Photo by Kent Murray) RMSH Students Nominated To Attend Allstate Competition Rocky Mount Senior High will be well-represented for the Allstate Competition to be held on the East Carolina Campus in Greenville, N.C. on February 15-16,1974. All-state Band is an auditioned group of high school students from eastern North Carolina rated by judges for their musical talent. Out of the hundreds that compete, only 160 students are selected. These 160 are divided into two bands - the Symphonic and the Concert Bands, with 80 members each. The trip begins Friday morning, the 15th, when the group will leave from Rocky Mount for their journey to Greenville. Auditions begin at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. However, one Friday night, the College Band performs for all of their guests on Campus. Auditions con tinue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Then in the evening, the selected Allstate players perform, and their exciting experience will end soon after, when they must return home. Each person who par ticipates in the Allstate Competition receives a medal. It is a round emblem with the shape of the state of North Carolina engraved, Greenville starred, and a pine cone centered in the state. Red, white, and blue ribbons are attached. Wade Woodley has received the medal for four consecutive years. Congratulations! The participants will perform under four directors - two from South Carolina, one from Virginia, and one from North Carolina. The Bands are graded numerically and classified into superior, ex cellent, good, fair, and poor categories. Ten to fifteen bands from eastern North Carolina are represented annually. The theme for this year was “Helping America Un derstand.” Across the state and nation various organizations celebrated Black History Week. A different issue was devoted to each day of the week. Sunday was Africian Heritage Day. The Black American involvement from the African Society was the key topic of this day. Monday was “Afro-American Con tributions to Socio-Political Life.” Blacks who have made important contributions in this field were recognized. Tuesday was “Afro-American Contributions Through In ventions and Discoveries.” Scientists, inventors, and others were commended for their work. Wednesday was “Afro-American Con tributions Through Economics.” Thursday was “Afro-American Con tributions Through Education and Human Values.” Friday was designated as “People and the Critical Issues of the Seventies” day while Saturday’s theme was “Brotherhood and the Better Way.” The Black Heritage Committee at RMSH planned activities to be held during the celebrated week. Black History Week is designed to recognize the important contributions of Blacks to our society. It also shows how Blacks have af fected the American way of life and have added their own special spices to the American cultural melting pot. SRA Meets For Second Semester The second meeting of the second semester SRA met Tuesday, February 12, during second period. After the devotion was given and the minutes of the last meeting were read, committee reports were given. The Social Committee reported that TWIRP (the woman is requested to pay) week will be held March 11-15, with a dance to end up the week. The Lost and Found Committee reported on the articles turned in first semester and the House and Grounds Com mittee requested that all students keep the freshly painted classrooms and restrooms clean.
