A meeting to reactivate
the AFS Program, under
which a foreign student will
spend a year attending school
here, was held in the Library
of R.M. Senior High School
Wednesday, January 30.
Mrs. Charles Hausen of
Goldsboro, the AFS Area
Director, was guest speaker.
Mrs. Hausen explained the
program and emphasized the
prerequisites for a local
program. They are as follows:
having an adult Chapter in the
city, sufficient civic support to
finannce the program, active
faculty cooperation, and also
the importance of having an
enthusiastic student group.
Those present voted to
organize an AFS Chapter. Mr.
and Mrs. J. W. Henderson
were elected to serve as Co
presidents of the Chapter, Mr.
and Mrs. Vernon Roebuck
became Co-chairpersons of
the Committee for the Host
Home Selection, and Mr.
Dudley Whitley will serve as
Finance Chairman. The
Junior Guild and the Kiwanis
Club representatives pledged
the civic and financial
cooperation of their groups.
The SRA is the sponsoring
student organization for a
foreign student. Bill Roebuck,
president of the SRA, presided
over the AFS meeting and
pledged student support in
every phase of the project. To
pursue the project suc
cessfully, every student must
become actively involved in
the program, and must do his
part in making the new AFS
student become a happy part
of our school and community
life.
Applications to serve as
host family will be submitted
during the month of February,
After the SFA has made the
Class Activities
Around RMISH
Around our school, there
are many fun and exciting
activities of which many
students are not aware.
On activity day in Mrs.
Thompson’s Geometry Class,
the students work on several
P-L-E-A-S-E
Both our buildings and
grounds are neat and at
tractive, and they should be. A
force of maintenance per
sonnel keeps them that way.
But a few of our people
are not neat. They use
stairways and sidewalks as
wastebaskets. They litter
corridors and the grounds
with their refuse.
These few people, only a
small percentage, cancel out
all the hard work of our
maintenance personnel. Like
other litterbugs, the specimen
is seldom malicious; he’s just
careless. A little thought is all
it would take to make him
reform.
If you’ve been one of the
careless characters, won’t
you take time to think?
different things. Some of them
construct interesting bulletin
boards, while others in the
Space Spiders Club work on
their Space Spiders, which are
geometric figures made with
a special type of string that
glows in the dark.
Then in Mrs. Murray’s
Biblical Literature Class, the
students sometimes show
their comprehension by
drawing a picture of what they
learned instead of writing a
paper. It brings back the
memory of the first grade for
the student as well as being an
interesting and meaningful
way for the teacher to judge
the student’s interpretation of
his readings.
On some pretty, sunshiny
day, you may see through the
windows one of the art
classes, being inspired in their
work by the beauty of nature.
Of course, the Journalism
Staff is always doing exciting
things such as laying out
pages and inteliriewing people
just to get this publication to
you.
