There is going to be a tight race in all the divisions. With not much time left there should be some wUd and wooly finishes. There are three teams with a chance of being number one in the American League East. Two teams are battli^ for the top spot in the American League West. The National League East has two teams fighting for top honors. In the National League West there is a two team race. Baltimore, Boston and New York will be fighting it out in the A.L. East. Baltimore has good hitting and solid defense. The pit ching staff should be strong right down to the wire. Boston has a mixture of young and old. Pitching should be strong. New York doesn’t get many homers nowadays, but the Yanks get timely hits. Pitching is a question mark. Oakland is the team to beat in the A.L. West. Texas thinks they can overtake Oakland. Oakland has a perfect blend of speed, hitting and pitching. The Athletics can do it all. Texas can hit the ball good, and their pitching staff has done an excellent job. Defense is the question mark for the Rangers. Pittsburgh and St. Louis are in a dog fight for the top of the N.L. East. st. Louis has great speed. They can hit also. Pitching is a question. Pittsburgh can play good defense and hit. If the pit ching holds up the Bucs will go down to the wire with St. Louis. LA and Cincinnati are evenly matched in every category. They both can rip the cover off the ball. Both have good speed. They have ! solid pitching staffs also. Who will win that is the question? You make your choices and see if you are right. Varsity Defeats Tarboro 16-0 RM vs Hoggard The RMSH Gryphon opened the season against Wilmington Hoggard. The Gryphs came out on the short end of a 30-0 score. The Vikings had 247 total yards while the Gryphs had 41. William Battle had 32 yards rushing for RMSH. Curt Fulcher looked good on defense. RM vs Tarboro RMSH won their first game of the season by shut ting out Tarboro 16-0. The Gryphs looked great against Tarboro. RM H had 204 yards total offense against 112 for Tarboro. Doug Henly passed for 75 yards. The defense had a total effort. RM vs Goldsboro The RMSH Gryphons traveled to Goldsboro for the third game of the season. After everything was said and done the Gryphs were 1-2. Mistakes cost RMSH the 13-0 loss. The defense played brilliantly throughout the game. m try refreshing SUN DROP Raleidi Rd. Therefore, “Jock Jots” is about people of the jockular persuasion. Much to the dismay of the RMSH athletic department, “Jock Jots” will be a continuous feature. You lose big. A Senior High girl, who shall remain nameless, always tries to sit behind the goalposts at football games. It’s the only way, she explains, that she sees so many men running straight at her. Howard Twilley, wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, opened a shoe store. The name? The Athlete’s Foot. One day, while flawlessly executing my hook-shot on my backyard basketball goal, I turned to an innocent bystander and said, “Wouldn’t you say that I was as least as good as Moses Malone?” “Well, I’d say that you were more like one-tenth as good as Malone,” he said. “That’s fine with me. The Utah Stars think that Malone is worth $3 million. If I’m one-tenth as good as Malone, then I should be $300,000 richer!” It’stw hot for football. Steve i-artm and Mike Pollard, two stalwarts of the football team, were spotted playing footall with several girls a few Sun days back. Practicing their tackling techniques, no doubt. Partin let a long pass go, and it got caught in the branches of a tree. Well, at least it didn’t land in the arms of the opposition, as so many Gryphon passes have. The Denver Broncos of the NFL hold hands in the defensive huddle. No comment. THE GRYPHON has enlarged its sports department this year in order to bring better coverabe of all Gryphon athletics. Members of this year’s sports staff are: Bill Matthews, Teresa Mosely, Corbi Bullock, Ben Currin, Virginia Culpepper, Wade Bryant, and Sara Jane Collier. The Gryphon Sports Department strives for complete objectivity and honest opinions will be ex pressed. Letters to the Sports Editor are encouraged, and will be printed if in good taste.
