(Bulluck) Individuals Excel The Rocky Mount Track Team has had a difficult season. Lacking talent in several areas, the Thinclads have come in second in two tri-meets and have lost their remaining matches. Even with a poor year there have been several individual bright spots including Julius Jones, Oie Osterkamp, David Jones, Bob Harris, and Lloyd Bynum. Julius, an excellent distance runner, has won the mile in 7 of the 9 meets, while placing in the other two. Oie Osterkamp, 880 yard runner, has consistently had fine times winning the event five times. David Jones, another exceptional distance man, has competed well in the grueling two mile run finishing first on several attempts. “Big Bob” Harris, the shot put specialist, has heaved the metal ball far enough to gain him two wins and the rest second or third. Lloyd “Poochie” Bynum, the fleet footed halfback for the Gryphs, has performed superbly in the 120 high hurdles, losing only twice this year to Gryphon opponents. Jeffery (Fried) Battle and Charles (Buck) Williams have both been selected to attend the B/C All Stars Summer Basket ball Camp in Georgia, which is by invitation only. Along with this honor, they both were selected All tournament during the Christmas tournament and made the first team. They both made the first team All Conference, Division I, All East selected by The News and Observer, and Buck was selected to the first team All State by the Greenville Daily News. When asked about his feelings. Coach Rederick Hen derson stated, “I’m really thrilled to have been associated with players of this caliber. They are both major college prospects. Buck has received more publicity because he attended the Sonny Hill Basketball League in Philadel phia, but with Jeffery participat ing in the B/C All Stars summer Basketball Camp in Georgia, I’m sure he will receive as much publicity as Buck has received this year. This Camp is by Invitation only. Buck will be able to attend if he can find a sponsor.” Attending this camp will be Tennis Team Winning OLIN STOOPS: Olln Wilson returns a low shot. (Bulluck) The boys tennis team is off to a good start this year with an 8 to 4 record. Coach Wallace says that the team is playing well, and he is predicting a good turnout. This year’s team is composed of the following members: Jim Thorp No. 1, John Exum No. 2, Paul Mayberry No. 3, Olin Wilson No. 4, Bob Allsbrook No. 5, Alan Horne No. 6, Mike Williams No. 7, Clifton Barnes No. 8, Scott Parrish No. 9, Pat Warren No. 10, and Nerrie Kholema No. 11. The 12 “bona fide” Superstars — play ers who are legitimate high school All-American to-be will attend. Sixteen high school coaches will help initiate the B/C All Stars Camp. All are rated among the elite in their home states. Virtually all have won the State Championships. Camp counselors include slaughtered with a marvelous 9 to 0 defeat. The game with Roanoke Rapids has probably been the most exciting game yet played. The No. 1 doubles, Jim Thorp and John Exum broke a tie of 4 to 4 to lead with a winning score of 5 to 4. However, the only two conference games played have been losses for the boys. The tennis team will soon send six boys to compete in the sectionals. RAMR DRUGS Reginald King, University of Alabama: Ricky Brown, Missis sippi State University; Stan Pietkiewcy, Auburn University; Walter Daniels, University of Georgia; and Jack Givens, University of Kentucky. Jeffery and Buck both have proved to be outstanding players. Buck scored 480 total points and 480 total rebounds, with Jeffery scoring 408 total points and 338 total rebounds.
