) Gryphons to meet Falcons by Hill Matthews Feature Elditor The Rocky Mount Gryphons will meet the Fayetteville Seventy-first Falcons tonight in the quarterfinals of the state 4A football playoffs. Fayetteville Seventy-first defeated Cary 14-0 last Friday in the post-season opener, and will bring an 8-3 record to Rocky Mount. The Gryphons, now 10-1, trampled Enloe 28-13 last week in their first playoff game. “Rocky Mount is a very talented foot ball team with a lot of top>-notch players,” said Falcon Head Coach Bob by Poss. “Offensively, they’re as good a team as we’ve seen. We’re going to have to have a good first down defense and work hard at playing keys if we’re going to stop them.” “I feel that Seventy-first is a good football team and we’re working hard to prepare our team, particularly our defense,” said Gryphon Head Coach Walt Wiggins. The Falcons run an I formation of fense led by quarterback Kevin Wardlaw. The Falcons get most of their yardage on the ground, although they have had some success with their pass ing attack. Tailback Greg Williams leads the Falcons in rushing with over 1,100 yards this season, including a 153-yard performance against Cary last week. The Gryphons netted 199 passing yards against Enloe, including three touchdown receptions by Ken Weaver and one by Paul Merritt. Quarterback Eddie Coats completed 13 of 21 passes with one interception, averaging just over 14 yards per completion. Kelvin Farmer led the rushing attack Friday with 104 yards and Kane Wilson chip ped in with 35 yards. by Gray Armstrong Grjrphon Sports Editor After a 13-4 record last year, the grappling Gryphons are expecting an even better season this year. One reason the Gryphons are so op timistic is that the team lost only two wrestlers from last year. “I think we may have the best team ever. We have so many good wrestlers,” Coach Stan Bastian said. The only major problem with the team is that there is a need of a 98 pound wrestler. “We need a wrestler of about 98 pounds. If we do not find one, we will forfeit six points a match. That will really hurt,” Mr. Bastian said. Another problem could be that the wrestling team has too many good wrestlers in the same weight class. “We have got some very good wrestlers who are in the same weight class. This means they will have to bump heads to see which one will wres tle in the meets. If we could only move them to another class,” Mr. Bastian said. The toughest part of the season could be right at the beginning. Right now with the football team in the state playoffs, the football and wrestling seasons are overlapping. Some of the key members of the wrestling team are also members of the football team, which means that they have been unable to practice wrestling so far. The first match of the regular season is slated for December 4, against Southern Wayne at Southern Wayne.
