TODD WALLACE

Math teams in three different
levels of mathematics recently
competed in state competitions
throughout eastern North Caro
lina. A math comprehensive
team, pre-calculus team, and al
gebra II team were composed of
gifted mathematics students
throughout the school.
Math teacher Diane Dixon
coached the pre-calculus team
which was composed of juniors
Angie Abernathy, Jim Rin-
gelspaugh and Robbie Zalzneck.
The team competed in Goldsboro
at Wayne Community College.
Students were given one hour to
work 40 problems individually.
The total number of correct an
swers were totaled both individu
ally as well as a team score. The
team did not place however as
students from Chapel Hill took
both categories.
Martha Lewis took two teams
into Greenville and came away
with impressive honors. The
comprehensive team, seniors Ed
Johnson, Mike Melody, and Lisa
Daughtry, placed third overall.
Daughtry will advance to the
state finals individually, as she
placed in the top six pcrcenL The
algebra team did not place in
their category but combined with
the comprehensive team to take
second place for the entire day.
The competition, which was held
on the campus of East Carolina
University, was run similar to the
pre-calculus format.

opportunity to senior Darryle Coppedge.
Career Day opens
new opportunities
Students received information about future career op
portunities on April 5 at the second annual Career Day.
Approximately 75 representatives from different profes
sions in the Rocky Mount community came to the school
to provide the students with pamphlets, brochures, and
other free information about their particular occupation.
Students walked to the various professions and asked
questions. After asking questions, students registered for
door prizes to be given away the next day.
The professionals who participated in Career Day
ranged from doctors to band workers and from local car
dealers to officers in the army.
Career Day activities were designed to encourage stu
dents to think about what they want to do with the rest of
their lives. “Career Day gives students an excellent oppor
tunity to learn about jobs and occupations they are inter
ested in, said Robert Horn, vocational coordinator.d “On
the other hand students can learn about new occupations
they knew nothing about,” Home continued.
