THE FULL MOON
BASEBALL TEAM AND COACH
Season Ends With
Thirteenth Victory
Although they had a very hard
schedule, the baseball team under
Coach Canipe won 13 games and lost
only five this spring.
Fourteen of the players received
letters: Ed Whitley, “Cob” Talbert,
“Ernie” Safrit, “Ikey” Williams,
“Shank” Niven, Ivey Whitlock,
“Buck” Mabry, Sherman Lowder, Ed
Swanner, Bill Furr, J. P. Mauldin,
Jack Williams, Rayvonne Furr and
Roy Clayton.
Senior Athletes
Win Recognition
The Seniors whose names will go
down in the Bulldogs’ Athletic Hall
of Fame will be “Ernie” Safrit,
Cob” Talbert, “Red” Whitley, Rob-
rt Osborne, “Shank” Niven, “Boney”
Greene, all being graduated this
ipring.
Three of these athletes, Safrit,
Whitley and Niven, were three-letter
this year, receiving monograms
for participation in football, basket
ball and baseball.
Talbert and Greene showed ability
by obtaining letters in two of the
major sports.
Osborne, captain of the Bulldogs,
IS selected by the conference
coaches as one of the backs on the
All-South Piedmont Eleven this year.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
BOYS’ BASKETBALL SQUAD
The boys’ basketball team won 17
out of 22 games last season. The
girls’ team had a less successful sea
son with only four victories out of
their 18 games, although they fought
with the true Bulldog spirit, espe
cially in the last games.
Eleven boys and ten girls received
their letters in basketball this year.
The boys were “Ernie” Safrit, Earl
Greene, Ed Whitley, Franklin Niven,
Carl Parker, Paul Mann, Paul Wil
liams, Sherman Lowder, Olyn Low
der, Ralph Harwood, and Ed Swan-
The ten girls awarded letters
Rosalind Hurt, Edith Mauldin, Hazel
Mauldin, Virginia Long, Emma Rose
Brooks, Lucille Mesimer, Margaret
Hutchins, Mabel Watson, Frances
Hatley, and Rachel Shankle.
ALBEMARLE BULLDOGS
TENNIS COURTS IMPROVED
Through the purchase of a much-
needed net, reel and roller the tennis
courts have been greatly improved.
It is hoped that for next year the
!w court will be in splendid condi
gn and that for the lines the school
ill purchase a wet marker which can
also be used on the gridiron.
Sixteen members of the football
squad received their letters this year
after closing a successful season in
which they scored seven victories, one
The lettermen were Robert Os
borne, Crawford Talbert, Ernie
Safrit, Carl Parker, “Buck” Mabry,
Earl Greene, Paul Williams, Ed
Swanner, Paul Mann, Ed Whitley,
Olyn Ijowder, Sherman Lowder,
Ralph Harwood, Alma Furr, Franklin
Niven, and Hubert Hearne.
Prospects For A. H.
After a recent interv
Joach Canipe, the sports
feels sure that the athletic
will be even better than those of
this season.
First comes football, which will
find itself losing six competent letter
men by graduation. However, each
place is to be lilled with two depend
able, if less experienced, players.
The entire backfield, with the ex
ception of “Buck” Mabry and “Ace”
Parker, will be lost. The line
lose two, but heavy reserves will
it back in working order.
Arlie Faulkner and Bill Mann will
fill Shank Niven’s vacancy at center.
Other linesmen will be Paul Mann,
Olyn Lowder, “Ikey” Williams, “Red”
Lowder, Riley McSwain, Ed Swanner,
Ralph Harwood, and others from the
midget team. The line will be much
heavier than last year’s.
Most of this year’s girls’ basket
ball team will be back, and with the
spirit and ability shown at the close
of the season, they should have the
best year yet.
In the boys’ basketball, four let
termen, Safrit, Whitley, Nive
Greene were lost, but lettermen for
each position will return.
In tennis the entire boys’ and girls’
teams will return with exception of
Rosalind Hurt, Julia Maye Rowland,
and John Snuggs.
The baseball team of ’38 will be
one of the best offensive teams
H. S. baseball history. Six efficient
men will be lost through graduation.
Three pitchers will return, Furr,
Mauldin, and Hathcock.’ “Cookie’
Clayton and Ted Wallace will be be
hind the plate. Jack Williams
Bill Furr will be in the infield.
