October, 1937 THE FULL MOON Page 5 SPORTS CLYDE McDOWELL, Editor Spiders Defeat ^ Bulldogs 7 to 0 In a fast and well-played game ■(the Concord Spiders proved to be too much for the Albemarle Bull- H dogs, Friday night at Concord, i when they defeated Albemarle high j Vj by the score of 7-0. The only touchdown of the game J came in the latter part of the sec- i, end period. The running attack, led by Walters, Barrier, and Al- j; len, netted 60 yards and a touch- down. Walters carried the ball over for the touchdown. The extra 7 point was made by a line plunge. “Buck” Mabry, Albemarle half back in the second period, made a 60-yard run by slipping out of the hands of Concord tacklers and by doing some good side-stepping. The I- ball was brought back because the b whistle had blown before he had slipped out of several tacklers’ The second period showed a dif- r ferent picture. Albemarle’s pass- Bi ing attack started clicking and ac counted for great gains. Albe marle’s defense was much better in the second half. A Concord drive was stopped by the Bulldogs on their own two-yard line. A passing attack led by Mabry, Blackwell, Williams and Furr placed them on I Concord’s 12-yard line, but a fight- u' ing Concord team would let them advance no farther. Concord made -j nine first downs, to Albemarle’ " ■ seven. All seven of Albemarle’ f first downs came in the last quar- M ter. Walters, Barrier and Allen, I* each making good runs, were the b« outstanding players for Concord. li Blackwell, Mabry and Williams, in the backfield, and Paul Mann in = the line were the outstanding play- — ers for Albemarle. Firit Period. I® Albemarle kicked off to Concord — and the ball was returned from the 25-yard line to the 35-yard line. After making small gains, Allen punted to Albemarle’s 10-yard line. j , Mabry returned the ball 23 yards to the 33-yard line. Williams punted and Paul Mann, Albemarle tackle, was down fast and hit the Concord safety man hard before he could gain any ground. The Concord backs pick ed up one first down before the ball went to Albemarle on downs. After making small gains, Williams punted and Walters returned it about eight yards. Concord backs reverses and spinners marched yards for a touchdown. A line plunge was good for an extra point. Concord kicked off to Albe marle and Williams returned it to his 35-yard line. The half ended after Albemarle had picked up four yards on a reve lateral. Third Period. Concord kicked off to Albe marle’s eight-yard line. Williams returned it to his 25-yard line. Be ing unable to gain ground, Albe marle punted to Concord’s 45-yard line. Concord made one first down before exchanging punts with Al bemarle. Concord then started an other drive that netted three first downs and a stand on Albe*iarle’ two-yard line. Albemarle’s line then held their ground and took possession of the ball on their two- yard line. Williams passed from his end zone to Bill Furr, left end, for 25 yards as the quarter ended. Fourth Period. Albemarle took up where they left off and made two first downs before punting. Paul Mann, Albe marle tackle, was down fast and stopped Blackwelder before he could make any gain. Concord then punted over the Albemarle goal line. Albemarle took possession of the ball on the 20-yard line. Passes to Mabry and Blackwell and some good running gave Albemarle three first downs. Williams then punted and the ball was returned to the Concord 20-yard line. Walters punted to the Albemarle 45-yard line. With one and one-half min utes to play, Williams passed to Blackwell for 15 yards and a first down. Two line plays and a pen alty against Concord gave Albe marle another first down. Black- well passed to Mabry for an eight- yard gain, which placed Albemarle on Concord’s 12-yard line. Al though fighting hard the Bulldogs were unable to get through the Concord line. Bulldogs Crush Spencer by 39- By a score of 39 to 0, the Albe marle Bulldogs defeated the Spencer Railroaders here October 8, in one of the most exciting games of the year. Touchdowns were made by Olyn Lowder, “Ikey” Williams, “Buck” Mabry, Black- well, and Jack Williams. The most outstanding player was “Ikey” Williams, Albemarle fullback. An 80-yard run made by “Buck” Ma bry and a 60-yard run by Jack Wil liams were sensational features of the game. Bulldogs Win Over Statesville After getting off to their best start of the season, the Albemarle Bulldogs defeated the Statesville Greyhounds here October 1, by the 1 of 10-0. The touchdowns made by Mabry and Black- well, while Mabry place-kicked one extra point. The other two points : as a result of a safety. Salisbury Defeats Albemarle by 6-0 The Salisbury Yellowjackets won a spectacular game from the Albemarle Bulldogs by the score of 6-0, at Salisbury, September 22. Salisbury made the only touchdown of the game after recovering a: Albemarle fumble on Albemarle’ 45-yard line. Benson carried the ball over for the touchdown. Mann was the outstanding linesman for Albemarle, while the backfield honors were more evenly shared. Stanly News and Press Stanly Theatre Bulldogs Triumph Over Watts, 7 to 0 On September 17 at the Efird park the Albemarle Bulldogs won the first grid game of the season when they defeated the Badin Watts by the score of 7-0. The only score of the game came when I?lackwell caught a short pass and raced 40 yards to the Badin 12- yard line. “Ikey” Williams car ried the ball over, and Mabry’s placement kick was good for the extra point. Austin, who showed up well by his running, kicking, and passing, was the most outstand ing player from Badin. Volley Ball Courts Are Opened Students who desire recreation and who are not out for any sports have the opportunity of participat ing in various exercises during the lunch period, under the supervision of Coach Canipe. Volley ball courts, for both boys and girls, have been made at the rear of the school building. Enough equip ment is available for boys and girls to have mushball games. If they are not on the high school squad, boys may play with the football Cheer Leaders Selected Because of their pep and initia tive the following members of the Boosters’ club have been appointed as cheer leaders: Inez Osborne, who is president of the Boosters’ club; Peggy Efird, Bill and Jo Hornbuckle, Frances Henning and Douglas Cranford. Sidney Gulledge was supposed to be selling brushes in a salesman ship practice in English club.
