December, 1951 THE FULL MOON Page 3 News and Notes JIMMY BROWN As most everyone knows, the A.H.S. band entertained around 70 persons at its annual banquet, which was held on Wednesday, November 21, at 7:00 p.m. It was pjanned and arranged by our own Junior Josey and Jim my Brown, who are officers of the band. Everyone had all the barbecue and slaw with rolls and coffee that we could eat. Our chap erones were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lentz, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Mor ris, Mrs. Mazel Lyke and Spencer Hatley. We were entertained with a dance ■ afterwards. H: 4: 4: This was the first year our band was not asked to attend the Charlotte Christmas Carrousel, but Mr. Hatley settled it by stat ing they just didn’t want any competition. * * The band is planning to give a small concert of Christmas songs in the series of Christmas music begun by the A.H.S. chorus led by Paul Fry last Friday night. This series of concerts is spon sored by the Merchants Associa tion and Chamber of Commerce. A different group is in charge each week, the performances be ing given at the Wiscassett play ground. :|c * * Our band is now forming quar tets and trios to compete in the spring contest held in Salisbury annually. Barbecue Enjoyed By Honor Society The new members of the Na tional Honor society gave the old members a Thanksgiving party Wednesday night; Novem ber 21, at the V.F.W. hut. Following a short prayer of fered by a member of each table, a delicious meal of hot barbe cue, slaw, and rolls with coffee and cokes was served. Mr. and Mrs. Westerlund and Mr. and Mrs. Cashwell were the chaperones. After the meal, everyone sat, around and watched television for a while. Young'uns Yarns JOHNNY YOUNGBLOOD Miss Caughman was taking up money for the Red Cross. Bud Griffith took out a dollar bill and a dime. “Which one you want?” he cisk0d “Well, I’ve always been taught to take the smallest,” she an swered, “so I’ll take the dime. However, Fll just take this piece of paper to wrap it up in.” Bud Griffith was telling Keith Byrd about a hunting trip. “Buddy Boone and I saw some of the biggest tracks in the snow.” “Hm,” grunted Keith. “Tracks make awful thin soup.” Betty Brunson had a bad dream. She dreamed that Henry and Errol Flynn were fighting over her — and Henry won. Doug Knotts says, “If you give a girl the world with a fence around it, she’ll turn around and give you the gate.” Mr. Fry was writing a note for Johnny Youngblood to take to Mr, Lentz. “Why do you write so slow?” asked Johnny. “He can’t read very fast,” ex plained Mr. Fry. Wouldn't You Like To Know Who picks up night when it falls? What becomes of the pieces when day breaks? What is it that clouds steal across the sky? Which is which when a man is beside himself? Are lofty thoughts those that originate in an empty loft? Who paid the Charge of the Light Brigade? How can a person “pass the night” when lying asleep in bed? Why is it that all movie de tectives wear their hats in the house? Pasty Pettit’s head is as good as new. After all, it’s never been used. Compliments of AUTEN-WOLFE MOTOR CO. Phone 126 Albemarle, N. North Carolina on Leslie Swanner, our football CO-captain, and it only follows as natural for Leslie to be our “Who’s Who” for this nionth.^ Here is one of the most ver satile students in A.H.S. Despite being the co-captain of the foot ball team and taking five sub jects this year, Leslie finds time to be active in the Monogram club and Mixed Chorus, along with being the business manager of the Full Moon and staff mem ber of Crossroads. This 5’ 10” sen ior readily admits that he has little spare time. Leslie’s idea of real “yummy” eating is a big T-bone steak with all the trimmings. He has singled out Jeff Chandler as his movie ideal, although he has no pref erence to which girl, just so long as she’s good-looking. Next year will probably find this senior following up his love of sports and his favorite sub ject, sociology, in a college in N. C. Leslie has not yet made up his mind which college he wants to attend, but he definite ly wants to major in physical education. This will be a fitting vocation for this sports-minded boy. PAULA HOWARD When you’re walking down the hall and notice that everyone se&ms to be looking at a very attractive 5’ 2” brunette, you immediately realize that it’s Paula Howard. Paula is the beauty queen of the senior class. She was se lected to represent A.H.S. at the Carolina Carrousel, where she caused much comment. Home coming saw this hazel - eyed beauty crowned queen. A school day is well filled for her. Five subjects and varsity basketball leave little time for extra-curricular activities, but Paula manages to take active part in the Monogram and Boos ters’ clubs, and on the Full Moon and Crossroads staffs. You would find that Paula would be happy in a restaurant or in a hot dog stand, since she likes food, period, without any particulars. Doris Day takes the spotlight as far as movie ac tresses are concerned, and any picture with Jeff Chandler will find Paula in the audience. After finishing school this year, Paula plans to attend Gardner- Webb Junior college and then to enter Wake Forest to complete her training for her major, relig ious education. Whether at Gardner ■ Webb, Wake Forest or A.H.S., Paula will continue to turn admiring glances in her direction. Scholarship Club Is Now Organized » A new organization has been formed to help the seniors of A.H.S. to apply for scholarships to various colleges and universi ties. This committee is composed of Miss Holbrook, chairman, and the following teachers as ad visors: Mrs. Westerlund, Miss Michael, Miss Caughman, and Mr. Fry. The purpose of this organiza tion is to investigate scholarships at different colleges and uni versities and advise the students in applying for these scholar ships. The committee has already compiled a list of available scholarships, and most of the senior English classes have fill ed out cards specifying their college choices and listing the scholarships they could apply for. Guidance Program Will Be Continued The guidance program for the last half of this semester is as follows: The freshmen are studying the subject “What Good Is ^ligh School?” The questions taken up have been: why should you go to high school, why high school is as it is, what’s wrong with high school, and what’s right with high school? “Why Stay In High School” is the topic of the sophomore class. The juniors are taking up the subject “Money and You”. The chapters on this are: with plenty of money, where does it come from, working for your money, don’t fuss—budget!, and spend ing your money. “Preparing for Marriage” is the topic the seniors have been study ing. Several speakers have spoken to this group on questions con cerning this subject. Mr. Ed Hol- bert, the first speaker, discuss ed “The Stages of Love”. Mrs. John Haynes spoke on “Going Steady”, and Mrs. E.'P. Brunson discussed “Choosing the Right Mate”. Plans have also been made for others to speak on different oc casions.
