December, 1951 THE FULL MOON Page 5 SPORTS PARADE Jimmy Skidmore Henry Carpenter Boys on the varsity football squad recently spent a very enjoyable day at Duke University, attending the Duke-Wake For est game, in which Wake took a thriller 19 to 13. On the return trip, many eventful things took place, with Jimmy Millican being the chief guinea pig. After being knocked over the head two or three times with a good cloth blackjack, Millican rose and stood in the aisle. “I have a piece of chocolate cake that says—uh!” he had begun as Fireball Doug Knotts bounced a juicy apple core off his head. Disliking this very much, Millican came charging towards the back row. When only a few feet away, he received a good push and stumbled right into some boys on the back row who were hold ing a nice mushy apple pie. Millican is now better known as ‘Tie Face Millican”. John D. Knotts, who has served as the co-captain of the AHS football team for the past season, was recently elected as co captain of the N. C. Shrine team. He was also called upon to call defenses, although some people thought he was punchy when he called for a passing situation. As he would swing his hands towards his helmet, it looked like he was trying to knock the pigeons off his helmet. AHS is proud of this boy, as he has brought honor not only to himself but to the whole school as well. Coach Webb was overheard to make this statement to the managers in his office the other morning: “Well, boys, you really did a fine job this season. I am proud of you, because you only lost three-fourths of. our stuff this year!” Boys’ basketball practice started a week before football sea son was over and is now going full swing. After losing all five starters from last year’s team, it is going to be a tough job to prepare a team for the coming season. Some changes have been made to add to the team’s hopes this year. They have two new boys, Jerry Traywick and Coy Herrin, and one new coach. Coach Lentz, who coached the Guilford team last year, is a great aid to Coach Jeffords as well as to the team, as he thinks up his slave-driving drills to get the boys in shape. Good luck, boys and may you have a very successful season! “The girls’ basketball team did not lose any of the first team players last year. With the experience as a whole team, they should be able to capture the conference,” stated Coach Schell. The Kimrey sisters will be expected to carry most of the load from the offensive side of the court. With Evelyn under the goal and Kathryn on the out-court shooting her well known long shots, they should roll up the points! The speedy sophomore Evelyn Kimrey, has been doing out standing work in her lay-up shots under the basket. With this contihuous pace she will be hard to stop by any opponent. Flashy Janet Glover is one of our most outstanding new comers to the team. Janet’s quickness with handling the ball is going to help A. H. S. win every game. Peggy Johnson, Betty Brunson, and Jean Barringer will see much action as defensive players, and with these three girls using zone defense, our opponents will have to have a few tricks up their sleeves to be able to get a shot'in under the basket! A welcomed guard, Barbara Huneycutt, is a new addition to the team also. She has been doing outstanding work as cen ter guard. Members of the team are Kathryn Kimrey, Evelyn Kimrey, Doris Hinson, Janet Glover, Jeannette Dennis, Paula Howard, Suzie Skidmore, Betty Brunson, Jean Barringer, Peggy Johnson, Janet Troutman, Barbara Huneycutt, Vann Lowder, and Betty Gantt Manager—Patsy Williford. LEADERS IN A SUCCESSFUL SEASON—Co-Captains Doug Knotts, who has been named to a number of All-State teams, and Leslie Swanner, who gained honorable mention for his powerful run- nmg from the fullback spot These two boys led the Bulldogs in both name and deeds this fall. The Bulldog co-captain was chosen as defensive - captain of the Tar Heels, and he proved his worth by stalwart line-backing in the game. Doug intercepted a pass, broke up at least one, and was in on tackles on both sides of the line. The North Carolina team won, and Doug came back sporting a gold football, a replica of which was given to each , player on the champion team in the 1951 Shrine Bowl. , Being chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl is the greatest foot ball honor for a senior in a North or South Carolina high school.
