Page 4 THE FULL MOON April 10, 1952 bulldog barks ATHLETES OF THE MONTH 'Tub" Russell One Athlete of the Month is thfe left fielder on the baseball team, Kenneth “Tub” Russell. “Tub,” as he is called by all of his friends, is a tall, likable, good looking senior who makes a habit of being friendly to everyone. Boxing is another onfe of “Tub’s favorite sports, and he is one of the mainstays on the “Y” box ing team, Kenneth has also been active in all our intramur al sports activities. He won the horseshtfe pitch for the 11th grade last year. Kenneth organized a boxing match for the benefit of the March of Dimes at the Y. M. C. A. this year and also boxed in it. In addition to all this, “Tub” has taken part in most all sports, varsity and intramural, that AHS has. Kenneth Hall One of the outstanding ath letes this month is Kenneth Hall, outfielder for this year’s baseball team, which has a big task ahead of it in defending the South Piedmont Conference championship won last year, by a team of experienced ball play ers. Kenneth covers the field easily and quickly and is a good field er. His throwing arm is strong and accurate. At the plate, he shows some weakness, but much promise. Although baseball is his fav orite sport, Ken participates in many other sports, though not on school varsities. In basket ball, he played on a champion Senior Hi-Y team and on an in tramural team that placted sec ond. He also played on many other intramural teams. H. P. Coach H. T. Webb insists that hitting will be the weakness. With only 3 players returning from last year’s team, the Bull dogs face a tough'er schedule, and power hitters haven’t been found yet. Because of the hit ting weakness the Bulldogs’ ability should not be underesti mated. Signs of promise are showing and may yet develop in to a team to be reckoned with. Returning from last year are Claude Lawhon, a junior who will play shortstop; Raygene Smith, a junior and only exper ienced pitcher; Ken Smith, a sophomore and a centerfielder. Ken appears to be one of the strongest hitters. James Gibson, a left hander, is another pitching prospect. T-Boe McLendon is doing the back- stopping now and he will see plenty of action. Jerry Traywick, the all-conference basketball player, is the first baseman. Jerry is also on'e of the stronger hitters. J. W. Foster, a sopho more, is looking good at second base. Larry Chance, a fresh man and third baseman, is one of the defensive players. Donnie Smith, anothfer freshman, is play ing left field. Tub Russell, the only senior on the team, is play ing left field. Tub also plays catcher. Several of the reserves aife dis playing their skill, and some of them may break into the lineup before the season is ovtr. Tommy Poplin, a senior at AHS, has won a scholarship at Eflon College on the basis of her grades and on the recommenda tion of Mr. Cashwell. L. C. These girls were at tractive and vivacious, with one common interest—boys. Joy, played by Tommie Poplin, was Maudie’s teenage cousin, who was shy around boys until she started following Maudie’s advice. David Morrow, cast as Davy, was Maudie’s pleasant and de pendable boyfriend who got tired of being a guinea pig for her experiments in “technique with men.” Jerry, played by Kent Hall, was a sincere likable fellow in his early twenties. However, he was so busy getting ahead in business that he failed to realize how deeply he cared for Sylvia until Maudie vvoke him up to that fact. Ted, played by Junior Josey, was Jerry’s age, good-looking, but more sophisticated than Jerry. Jimmy Brown, cast as Chi, was Davy’s age, very handsome, and he knew it. Margaret, the maid, was play ed by Catherine Atkins. How ever, she was considered more one of the family than a maid. Mrs. Whit, Mrs. Allen, and Mrs, Day were the mothers of the three teenage girls, and they didn’t care for Maudie’s tech niques.
