October 3, 1952 THE FULL MOON Page 7 Talented Seniors Bring Fame To Old Home Town Albemarle was “put on the map,” last sumer by two AHS senior girls. Both Marilyn Greene, and Shirley Medlin won high honors in Miami, Florida, and New York City. It all started last May with a local contest held to select Al bemarle’s entry in the Southern Radio Queen contest. The win ner was to compete in Miami with contestants from other southern states. In the local contest petite, golden-throated Marilyn Greene walked away with top honors. Martha Rae Harris,, runner-up in the contest, was also invited to go to Miami, and Shirley Medlin, Albemarle’s entry last year was invited to return to Miami and entertain again. On June 22 the three girls, ac companied by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Page and Mrs. D. B. Greene ,ar- rived in Miami. The week that followed was certainly a thrill ing and eventful one for the girls. There were dinners at various Miami hotels and lunch eons with all the leading civic organizations. Then on Sunday night Marilyn Greene was unanimously crowned Radio Queen of the South with her Wonderful rendition of ‘‘One Kiss.” The same night Shirley Medlin was awarded a special trophy naming her the Radio Princess of the South. One of the prizes for winning the title of Radio Queen of the South was a trip to Cuba, so Al bemarle’s Marilyn Greene em barked on this exciting voyage with her mother and several other girls. While in Cuba, Marilyn met El Presidente of Cuba and dined at the fabulous Tropicana night club. Marilyn says that the Tropicana is too beautiful for words. Almost two months later Marilyn and Shirley, accompan ied by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fry, left for New York City to audit ion for Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour. The auditions were held Monday night and Shirley Medlin was chosen to ap pear on the coast to coast tele vision show the next night and the Amateur Hour radio show on Thursday night. Shirley sang “Pretty-Eyed Baby” and received much acclaim for her delightful rendition of the song. Marilyn thought that seeing the crew prepare for the television broadcast was one of the most exciting things she had ever seen. While in New York the girls, along with Mr. and Mrs. Fry, saw three Broadway shows: “Wish You Were Here ” “South Pacific,” and “Pal J?ey-” They also visited the Radio City Mu sic Hall and saw the movie and the stage show there. Finally, after one glorious week in New York City two hap py girls returned to a home town that was mighty proud of both of them. E. B. STONE FINANCE CO. OF ALBEMARLE, Inc. C. On the Beat Aveline Morton Here comes the Band news; you better be in step or else! Yes, the new members of the band are having a hard time keeping in step and playing all at the same time. They’ll learn the hard way. Put kidding aside, and say A. H. S. has a swell band even after losing some mighty fine students last year. If you have been to all the football games so fiar you have seen the band doing a wonder ful job at the halftimes. Thanks to Mr. S. B. Hatley, band direct or. Frank Burrell is president of the band, and Larry Hartsell is vice president. It looks like it takes tWiO girls to hold the secre tary’s job Aveline Morton and Frances Ross. The band students better keep an eye on Elliott Gaddy. He is looking out for money this year. Two new majorettes and a Drum Major have been chosen this year. They are Linda Moose and Harvey Ann Smith, and Jean Starr as the Drum Major. The girls are doing a fine job together with Barbara Lowder, Sylvia Rogers, Kathryn Groves and Jeanette Dennis, last year’s majorettes. The AHS band participated in Duke’s Band Day September 20 and the students are looking forward to Oct. 11, when they play for Carolina and State’s foot ball game. Maybe it is the bus trips they are looking forward to. Ugh! Paul H., Sue W., Pat H., Aveline M., Aaron L., Patsy G., and Larry ?.? OH! Yes! Didn’t mean to forget Jack M. and Jimmy B. BE WISE!
