C. Downbeat By BILL BEEKER The Albemarle High School Band , is now making its plans for the rest of the year. Among these plans are several concerts and the annual band contest. In order to be fully prepared for all these events, Mr. Hatley, the band director, has made a schedule of rehearsals for all the different instruments, so that each band member will be requir ed to have an extra hour’s prac tice every week. Some of the band students have attended band clinics held in Wadesboro and Gastonia. Stu dents coming back from these clinics brought with them many new ideas about the new music Mr. Hatley bought. Mr. Hatley attended these clinics also, and decided it would be a good idea to use some of the same tunes play er there for the A.H.S. Band con certs. Some of the new numbers are: “Ballet Parisien”, “Pajama Game”, “Let Me Go, Lover”, and “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane.” TEACHER Of The Month The first lady-teacher to be recognized in Albemarle High School as the Teacher of the Month is Mrs. Jacob M. Carter. She is a former student of Ham let High School and a graduate from Woman’s College in Greens boro. In 1950 she became a mem ber of the Albemarle High School faculty, where she began teach ing business, which includes short hand, typing, bookkeeping, and Business English. At this time everyone knew her as Mildred Kyzer. In 1953 she was married to Jacob M. Carter, a local teach er. Along with her other duties, Mrs. Carter is the advisor for the school annual. This duty re quires much skill, time, and pa tience, and through her helpful ness, understanding, and support a better annual is produced each year. To Mrs. Carter, who has added much to the school and its stu dents, we extend our utmost ap preciation. SOUTHERN FLOUR MILLS. Inc.
