May, 1955 THE FULL MOON Page 7 Smith, Cashwell I Shine In Contest As a result of winning the de bates on March 18 the A.H.S. af firmative and negative teams went , to the Salisbury District Contest held at Catawba College, April 7. The negative side, coached by Mrs. Hiriam Saunders, and made , up of Dick Cashwell and Vivian : Smith was chosen to debate in the semi-finals that night. They were defeated, however, by Hanes High School of Winston-Salem. The affirmative team, consist ing of Pat Allan and Gene Burris and coached by Miss Jean Abra- hamsen, was defeated earlier. Miss Abrahamsen accompanied this group to Salisbury, April 7. Two Top Notchers Chosen By MMM ■ Yoder Whitley and Amorelle ^cker were recently chosen at the monthly meeting of the Mod- j Music Masters Society as : the two M.M.M. Top Notchers tor the months of April and May respectively. ’ Their records will be sent to the School Musician, a monthly ^agazine, and will be voted on along with other Top Notchers over the nation, in a choice of two to appear in the Magazine. • Yoder Whitley has been a mem- of the band for eight years and was one of the first to be inducted into the Modern Music Masters Society. Amorelle Tucker has been an 9^tstanding pianist at A.H.S. dur ing her four years, and she has ^ade several superiors at the district piano contest. All these qualities are taken into consideration when the vot- Down Beat The A.H.S. band has taken a little rest from its activities dur ing the past six weeks, the main activity being the Easter Sun rise Service at Stony Hill Metho dist Church. In order to play for this serv ice the band members had to meet at the band hall at 4:30 a.m. There they got their instruments and proceeded to Union Methodist Church, where they were served doughnuts and coffee. After this “refresher”, the band assembled at Stony Hill and play ed for the sunrise service. Some of the numbers played were: “Beautiful Savior,” “How Bright ly Shines the Morning Star,” and “Come, Soothing Death”. After the service the band was dismiss ed. Mr. Hatley plans soon to get some new music for the band. Among these will be some classi cal numbers. Mr. Hatley recent ly bought two new arrangements, “New World,” and “Elsa’s Pro cession to the Cathedral.” Seniors In Band Receive Sweaters All seniors in the Albemarle High School Band received the long awaited band sweaters last week. The sweaters finally ar rived after being ordered for al most two months. The sweaters, made of 100% knit wool, are royal blue in color. The letter is in the form of a music lyric with AHS BAND writ ten on it. The cost of the sweaters was approximately $250. At the festival these chorus members practiced the following songs: “Hodie”, “Lacymosia”, “Gloria in Excelsis”, “All Crea tures of Our God and King”, “Echo Song”, “Sanctus and Hos- anna”, “O Praise the L6rd”, “Da vid’s Lamentation”, and “How Firm A Foundation”, under the direction of Dr. Lara Hoggard. Then on the last night the group presented a public program in the Aycott Auditorium. Those who attended the State Festival from Albemarle High School are: First soprano, Elaine Lowder, Linda Duke; second soprano, Elaine Mills, Judy Scaggs; first alto, Pat Allen, Ann Smith, Frances Litaker; second soprano, Charlotte Pope, Martha Har- ward. First tenor, Belvin Terry, Bob by Peck; second tenor, Pete Chance, Luther Kimery; baritone, Dickie Cashwell, Edward Hatley, Lewis James; bass, Charlie James, Roger Saunders, and Donnie Smith. Robes Selected By Senior Class The Senior class will graduate in robes of their own school colors, the boys wearing navy blue and the girls white. The robes will cost $3.75 for the blue and $4.10 for the white. This includes 35 cents for the tassel which each senior will keep as a remembrance of his graduation from AHS.
