Page 10 THE FULL MOON June, 1955 MMM Initiates Thirteen Band And Chorus Members The Modern Music Masters So ciety initiated eleven chorus mem bers and two band students, along with an honorary member, in as sembly on May 6. Mr. Carl Efird was honored by the society for his work as former band leader and music teacher of Albemarle. The new members are Janis Westerlund, L^nda Duke, Wade Smith, Elizabeth Tucker, Luther Kimery, Eugene Burris, Jimmy Almond, Dotty Walker, Sue Rog ers, Maxine Harwood, Peggy Furr, Rex Whitley, and John White Id- dings. The new members presented a program to old members and the student body as follows: “Embraceable You,” sung by Janis Westerlund, Linda Duke, and Elizabeth Tucker; “Davy Crockett,” by Wade Smith, Luth er Kimery, Eugene Burris, and Jimmy Almond; and “Sincerely” by Dotty Walker, Sue Rogers, Maxine Harwood and Peggy Furr. Rex Whitley and John White Id- dings, accompanied by all the band members, played “Tweedle Dee”. An old member, Edward Hat ley, sang “Unchained Melody”, and later on during the program sang “Wall Flower” with Susie Swaringen. C Used Car Lot at Corner of West Main and Coble Ave rwo Seniors Win Music Diplomas Amorelle Tucker and Joan Mel ton will receive high school diplo mas in music along with their regular high school diplomas this spring. These girls passed their final ex aminations under Dr. Elliot Grif fis during the National Auditions of the pupils of the Albemarle School of Music, of which Miss Annyce Worsham is director. Amorelle and Joan received in ternational honors for a memo rized program of 15 pieces. Patricia Starnes and Elizabeth Hatley won national honors for a program of 10 memorized pieces. Local honors for presenting a memorized program three to five pieces was given to Peggy Smith. Organic and inorganic king doms was Mr. Hatley’s subject, but his science class was dull. “By way of illustration,” he said patiently, “now, if I shut my eyes —^so—and drop my head—so— and remain perfectly still, you would say I was a clod. Accessories I East Main Street PHONE 340 Mixed Chorus Presents Spring Concert On May 20 The Mixed Chorus, under the di rection of Mr. Paul Fry, presented its annual spring concert last Fri day night in the Albemarle High School auditorium. The Boys’ Chorus, Girls’ Chorus, and Ninth Grade Chorus assisted them with their performance. Al so featured were the Girls’ En semble, Boys’ Double Quartet, duets, and soloists. The program of sacred, novelty, popular, and patriotic songs went as follows: First group: Mixed Chorus sang “Hallelujah”, from “Judas Macca- baeus”, “Tenebrae Factae Sunt”, “Were You There?”, and “Holy City.” Second group: “Barefoot,” “The Gandy Dancers’ Ball”, and “Skip To My Lou” by the chorus. Third group: “Unchained Mel ody” was sung by Edward Hatley. Arce Rose Rich (soprano) and Roger Saunder (bass) sang “My Hero”, from the “Chocolate Sol dier”. The Girls’ Ensemble sang “Blue Moon”, and then “Some En chanted Evening” was sung by Roger Saunders. “Serenade”, sung by Ted Burleson (tenor) and Elaine Lowder (soprano), and “Melody of Love” by the Boys’ Double Quartet, marked the end ing of this group of songs. Fourth group: The Mixed Chor us sang “Summer Time”, “While You’re Young”, “The Blue Room", “Sleep, Baby, Sleep”, and “The Surrey, With the Fringe on Top”' Then Joan Renger (soprano) and Edward Hatley (baritone) sang “Indian Love Call”. The group of popular songs was ended by the chorus singing, “Oh What A Beau tiful Morning” and “Oklahoma”. Fifth group: “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor” was sung by the Mixed Chorus. The Girls’ Trio sang “God Bless America” and the Mixed, Girls’, Boys’, and Ninth Grade Choruses combined to sing “America”, “Born to be Free”, and “Battle Hymn of the Repub lic”.
