Page 4 THE FULL MOON June, 1955 BULLDOG BARKS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Patty Mann Our girl athlete for this month is Patty Mann, scorekeeper for the girls’ basketball team. Patty, while not participating directly in any sport, has surely been a great asset to the team. Patty’s bright and cheerful personality is the reason for her many friends. She has a friendly hello for everyone she meets. Because of her ability and intelligence, she acquired the job as secretary at Central Elementary School this year. Patty, even though she is a D. O. Student, still has time for several extra-curricular activities. She participated in Stunt Night and Field Day and was a member of the Monogram Club. Patty was also treasurer of the Tri-Hi-Y Club, a member of the Booster’s Club, and Secretary of her homeroom. This is very little credit for a person who has done so much for her team and school. Ray Barrjnger n Ray Barringer, friend to everyone, is our athlete for this month. While Ray has ngt taken part in a sport, there have been times when the games couldn’t have gone on without him. As bus driver for the team, Ray has always been dependable and capable. Ray, with his cheerful personality, has won for himself, quite a lot of friends around A. H. S. Ask anybody you see about Ray and they will tell you he’s just about the best boy they know. Ray played a great part in stunt night when he was in the ninth grade. He has also taken part in the Science Fair and in Field Day. You will always see Ray at the game cheering his team along as a member of the Boosters Club. Ray has also been a Student Council representative for his home room, and a worker in the student lounge concession. Sports Parade Looking back over the 1954-55 sports program at Albemarle High School, we see a conference championship in football, a Shrine Bowl Coach, five all-conference football players, two Shrine Bowl players, two all-star players, a basketball team winning a tourna ment spot, seniors winning field day, and a baseball team that could never seem to click. Football ' At the start of the ’54 football season, things didn’t look toG bright for the Bulldog eleven, as many of the stalwarts from the previous year’s Conference Championship team had graduated. The Bulldogs started the season with many green and light play ers, but what they lacked in. size and experience they made up for in hustle and fight, and for the second straight year they were conference champions. Bobby Peck, Donnie Smith, John Moose, Wade Smith, and Charles James were chosen for the All- Conference team, while Donnie Smith, Charles James, and John Moose also made the All-State football team. The Bulldogs were honored further when Coach Webb was chosen as a Shrine Bowl coach, John David Moose and Charles James were chosen to play in the Shrine game, and again when Donnie Smith and Charles James were chosen to play in the East-West All-Star game. Basketball After a poor start the basketball team fought back strong and finished the season with a 7-7 record, and when they beat Landis in the final game, they won a spot in the South Piedmont basketball tournament. Jimmy Coggins and Wade Smith were the stalwarts on the team, and each has another year. Baseball. The baseball team got off to a good start when they won their first game, but after this the breaks seemed to go against them and the team had a hard time in winning four games out of twelve. Field Day In a very close battle, the seniors beat the sophomores by fifty points in AHS’s annual field day. The scoring was close all the way, the difference coming when the senior relay team won both the 240 and the 400 yard relays. Graduating Athletes These seniors played their final contests for AHS this year: Lendell Smith, Bobby Peck, John David Moose, Charles James, Donnie Smith, Skipper Gantt, Elliott Gaddy, John McLaughlin, Dickie Cashwell, Roger Freeman, Roger Saunders, Marvin Clark, Larry Chance, Pat Allan, Louise Cooper, and Harvie Ann Smith. Doug Knotts and Ed Patterson, both past stars of the Bulldog eleven, have had outstanding records at Duke and Carolina. This year they were both chosen to the college All-State football team. Ed received more votes than any other college player in the state and was the honorary captain of the All-State team. Doug is only a junior at Duke, and we will be hearing great things from him next year. Otty Lynn, Ralph Setzler, and Richard Jordan at Davidson and Jimmy Millican at Western Caro lina are making outstanding rec ords as freshman footballers for these two schools, respectively.
