SPECIAL RECOGNITION GIVEN AHS STUDENTS Awards Day Honors Deserving Students The annual Awards Day pre sentations were made at assem bly last Friday. Various school and civic or ganizations gave medals along with cash awards to deserving A.H.S. students. The $100 cash award presented by the Civitan club for good citizenship was given to Elliott Gaddy, who also won the Good Citizenship medal given by the school. The D.A.R. Good Citizen award was presented to Barbara Holt, while Amorelle Tucker was the recipient of the $100 savings bond given by the National Hon or Society. The World Peace prizes were given to Peggy Furr, Iris Hun- sucker, and Patricia Thompson. The TB essay prizes were won by Peggy Smith, Libby Hatley, and Patricia Starnes. Dickie Cashwell was presented a plaque recognizing him as a Morehead Scholarship winner, and Frances Litaker and Joan Renger were given the valedic torian and salutatorian awards. The best athlete awards were won by Harvie Ann Smith and John David Moose, while the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship awards went to Louise Cooper and Bobby Peck. Awards went to debating team members, Eugene Burris, Pat Al lan, Vivian Smith, and Dickie Cashwell, while Charlotte Pope and Donnie Smith took the dra matics awards. The music award in chorus was given to Edward Hatley, and the band award to Frances Ross. Judy Scaggs was presented the major ette award. The science award went to Bill Beeker and Bill Fisher won the history award. It was alsc^ announced that senior class has received over $60,000 in scholarships this year. Track Team scored 5 points in the South Piedmont Conference Track Meet which was held in Davidson, May 13. Wade Smith won first place in the broad jump by jumping 20 feet, SV2 inches. This mark sets a new conference record. This was the fourth track meet of the season for the A.H.S. track men. Other track meets held this year were with Lexington, Kan napolis, and Mooresville. There was a senior named Ray Whose excuses were printed each day. The best one “driving the bus,” Was always amazing to us: How could he go wrong each way? Bedbug: Undercover agent.
