October, 1955 THE FULL MOON Page 7 The Music Goes 'Round & 'Round' By FISH FISHER ON THE MARCH: Let the trumpets sound! Let the cymbals ring! The A.H.S. band, under its new director, Mr. Tommy Hauss, is once again on the march. Mr. Hauss, who played two years in the 283rd Army Band at Fort Benning, Ga., after attending Appalachian State Teachers College, arrived a week before school opened, immediate ly issued uniforms, and began band practice on Friday, August 26. In front of the band this year is Folger Koontz, who is doing a most commendable job as drum major. Following him are the majorettes, Peggy Furr (chief), Barbara Furr, Linda Moose, Bren da Gantt, and Jo Parks. Then come the letter girls, Jeannette Hinson, Martha Huckabee, and Elizabeth Tucker. Section heads for the marching band are as follows: Percussions, Jerry Cooper; Trumpets, Hubert Rogers; Baritones, Roger Hun- sucker; Trombones, Paul Frick; Compliments of H. & L Groceries and Meats A Good Place To Shop North Second Street PHONE 178 Nehi Beverage Co Inc. Helms Is Elected Carolyn Helms was elected president of the Booster’s Club at their first meeting, which was held Tuesday. Other officers elected were Kay Swindell, vice president, and Betty Holt, secretary and treasurer^ Basses, Fish Fisher; Clarinets, Patsy Griggs; Oboes, Yvonne Chandler; Flutes, Pamela Hin son; and Saxophones, Paul Haire. ACROSS THE FIELD: Although handicapped by having only 41 members, the band is giving a good account of itself. As in years before, the playing has been definitely superior and the marching has been well above average. During the halftime show at the Landis game, forma tions including an “L”, a treble clef, and a stick figure of a girl were made. Going onto the field to the tune of “Entry of the Glad iators,” the band played “Our Di rector,” ‘Tm a Jayhawk,” and “I Want a Girl”. Simple shows, consisting of a spiral in front of the cheering section and letters for both teams were given at the Lexington and Kannapolis games. Wet grounds kept the band from marching at the Winecoff game. MUSIC NOTES: To the ALBE MARLE WOMAN’S CLUB, CIV- ITANS, JAYCEES, LIONS, and ROTARIANS goes the band’s sin- cerest thanks for donating schol ar ships, making it possible for Pamela Hinson and Fish Fisher to attend the summer music ses sion at East Carolina College. Very capably representing the majorettes at East Carolina’s ma jorette camp were Peggy Furr and Linda Moose. Several -musical masterpieces, possibly including “Till Eulen- spegil’s Merry Pranks” and the “Polvtsian Dances,” will be ac quired for the concert season. Lowder's Shop Body Repair . . .
