Page 4 THE FULL MOON November 18, 1960 BULLDOG BARKS Athletes Of The Month CRAVEN MORTON Patience and a willingness to learn have reaped a rich re ward for our first Athlete of the Month, Craven Morton. This year is Craven’s first as a member of the varsity foot ball squad, and when the campaign opened, he was a member of one of the reserve units. As a result, he saw most of the Bulldogs’ early games from the sidelines. However, his efforts were not in vain, and after the injury-marked game at Kan napolis, he was given a chance to play regularly. Craven made good,, and ever since has turned in an outstanding performance for the team. He has excelled particularly well on the defensive unit, where he plays one of the. linebacker positions. As a pass defender and solid tackier. Craven can always be counted on to do his share when Albemarle’s opponents have the ball. Therefore, for his fine effort and determination, we are proud to salute him as an Athlete of the Month. GARY MAULDIN Our next Athlete of the Month is also a first-year man on the football squad, who, by his hard work and effort, has earned a fine reputation as a member of the Bulldogs. We are speak ing, of course, of Gary Mauldin. As a member of the varsity this year, Gary has turned in a more than adequate performance at the right guard position. In addition, he does most of the kicking-off duties for the Bulldogs. Gary has also earned quite a reputation in athletic fields other than football. For the past two years he has been an out standing member of the wrestling team. Just last year he placed second in the Piedmont Conference wrestling tournament. Track and baseball are other sports in which he has participated at A.S.H.S. A fine all-around athlete and person, we feel that Gary is deserving of the Athlete of the Month award. Football Recap The 1960 season turned out to be a lean one for the Bullpups After six successive South Piedmont championships, and two Western North Carolina football titles, the Bulldogs could show only a 4-6 record and fifth place finish when this football season came to a close. Bessemer High was their "first opponent, and the Bulldogs made a thrilling start by rolling to a 50-7 victory. Next came China Grove, which the boys won 7-6. Lexington started the Bulldogs on a three-game losing streak by beating them 12-7. On the next game, Concord’s Spiders emerged victorious, 18-0 The Kannapolis game followed, and again the Bulldogs came out on the short end, this time by a 20-0 score. Albemarle got on the victory trail again in the next two games, downing Thomas- ville 20-14, ana winning 6-0 over Landis. A strong Rockingham team brought them back to earth the next week, however, gain ing a 20-0 victory. Statesville then added a sour note to the Homecoming game by defeating the Bulldogs 19-14. And, in the season’s finale, despite a fine team effort, the Bulldogs were denied their fifth victory of the season, losting 13-0 to Asheboro HARWOOD'S FLORIST Flowers For All Occasions DIAL YU 2-2157 PHILLIPS CLOTHING COMPANY — Clothing for Men and Boys — YU 2-3116 :: 127 N. Bulldogs To Begin Basketball Season The sound of basketball is being heard in the gym of Albe marle Senior High because the basketball season is here at last. Since October 17, Coach Frazier has been working with the boys that are going out for the team. There aren’t many boys out right now, but when the boys that are now playing football come out, there will be more than enough. This means that some of the players will be cut from the team. Rockingham Beats Albemarle, 20-0 Albemarle’s Bulldogs gave Rockingham a rough time dur ing the first half, but couldn’t keep them contained and lost a non-conference thriller to the Rockets, 20-0. Through the first quarter it was a game of defense with both teams having trouble moving the ball. Late in the first period Rockingham got a drive started and scored in the early minutes of the second quarter, with Tut- hill carrying the ball over for the touchdown. The drive had been stopped on the one-foot line, but Albemarle fumbled on the next play and Rockingham went on from there. The Bulldogs were able to move the ball on several oc casions with Nelson and Jerry Smith doing most of the ball han- ling, but could never pene trate very deep. The halftime score was 6-0. The Rockets came out fired-up in the second half and scored twice on drives of 63 and 35 yards, making the score 20-0. Then early in the fourth pe riod the Bulldogs had its only real scoring opportunity, when Craven Morton intercepted a Tuthill pass and Albemarle moved the ball to the 12 yard line. Here the drive was halted and Rockingham took pver. This was it for the Bulldogs, and the game ended 20-0, with the Rock ets taking it. The Bulldogs played a good game with Morton, Furr, Mont gomery, Underwood, and Burris playing an excellent game, and are to be commended. Compliments of J. H.
