Page 4 THE FULL MOON October 6, 1961 BULLDOG BARKS Athletes Of The Month STEVE BURLESON Our first Athlete of the Month, Steve Burleson is a Bulldog who can always be relied upon to put forth his best effort. Steve can be counted on for either offensive or defensive play. As an offensive player he run?: capably as fullback or end, while on defense he performs alertly as end or backing up the line. Being a two-year veteran of varsity play, Steve is a valuable asset to the Bulldogs. We are, there fore, honored to salute him. as the Athlete of the Month. TONY FURH “Hardrock,” as he is popularly known to A S. H. S, students, is an unforgettable person. Easy going and friendly off the field, Tony is “a ball afire” on the gridiron. Holding down the position of guard on offense and tackle on defense, he can always be counted on for a first-rate job. Tony is also a two-year veteran of varsity play. A scratched-up nose is his trademark; we are, there fore, proud to salute him as the Athlete of the Month. Bulldogs Seem Ready! Fresh from three victories over rough gridiron competitors, the Bulldogs seem on their way to a fine season. Having moved into a new neighborhood last fall, the Bulldogs seem to have adapted themselves quite well to their relatively new surroundings. In the words of Coach Gantt, “This is the. toughest schedule any Albemarle team has ever had to face, but we wouldn’t have accepted it unless we thought the team could do it.” Everybody is waiting for the outcome of the Bulldogs’ gridiron hostilities, that promises to be over in late November. Win, lose, or draw we know that the Bulldogs will carry the honor and name of the school wherever they will go, so go get ’em Bulldogs! li^ip “ ■■ vV m CONGRATULATIONS were in order for Gary Morton, after intercepting pass and running for TD. The Bulldogs, standing third in the conference, are itching to even the score with Kannapolis for the 20-0 defeat of last year. Kannapolis, not losing too many players last year, is expected to give , the Bulldogs a tough fight. The Little Wonders are in fourth place in the conference with a won two, lost one, and tied two record. They wound up with a 7-7 tie against Statesville last week. Underwood, Furr Make Check List Johnny Furr, left guard, and Jeff Underwood, left tackle, have made the Greensboro Daily News’ check-list for their fine play against Albemarle’s football com petition. Johnny Furr’s rugged and ag gressive play in the Albemarle- Myers Park gridiron battle aided immeasurably in holding the Mustangs to a relatively low rushing yardage of 100 yards Jeff Underwood’s inspired play at the defensive quarterback po sition contributed a great deal in the Bulldogs’ 19-0 South Pied mont Conference win over the South Rowan footballers. The outstanding work of these two men has helped to rate Al bemarle’s 1961 football squad in fifth place in state current Class 3-A Top Ten football standings by the Greensboro Daily News. 60 yard punt return from his own 40 yard line. The point after touchdown was wide. Albemarle led at half-time 13-0. Gary Morton came through with a pass interception and ran 16 yards for the final touchdown of the game.
